Tom B Asks: In May of this year, Hasselblad silently discontinued their leading Hasselblad Flextight scanners as future Mac updates will be incompatible with their color software. I’m not sure they really had competitors for quality (other than ancient, cumbersome and fiddly drum scanners), and it makes me wonder where this leaves the high end scanning …
By pointing cameras to the night sky, photographers open themselves up to the wonders of the stars and other heavenly bodies. As with any kind of photography, it requires some camera settings to make sure you get the shot at the best results possible. If this sounds like something you need help with, today’s photography cheat sheet is definitely for you.
When portrait photographers pick up the Canon RF 85mm f1.2 L USM, they’ll start to realize the absolute magic that it’s capable of when rendering a portrait subject. I’ve realized that Canon’s lenses haven’t always been about scoring high on DXOMark tests, but that they’re instead designed for the character. Canon’s RF 50mm f1.2 L USM delivers an almost medium format look that’s only possible with an 80mm f2 on a 645 body. And the Canon RF 85mm f1.2 L USM isn’t anything different. Even when shooting wide open with a flash, the look that you get is far unlike anything else that you’ll get. That’s not at all to say that everything else isn’t capable of delivering beautiful images. But a long focal length at f1.2 is something to really behold.

If you’re into the dreamy imagery created by misty and foggy scenery, we’re sure you’ll find this new series gorgeous and inspiring.
Flickr is going through something of a rebirth of late. After years of decline, the online photographic community was purchased by SmugMug in April 2018. Since the purchase, the once faltering photography service has found new legs, and today another new feature has been added to the online platform. Flickr announced today that a new photo printing service called Flickr Prints is now available to all members. Join us after the break for all the details.
Just a few short years ago you would’ve been hard-pressed to find photographers who wanted to use third-party lenses over first-party offerings. Until Sigma and Tamron upped their game, the lenses they produced were slow, cheaply made, and couldn’t match the image quality of first-party lenses. Oh, how times have changed. Now, third-party lenses meet and sometimes even exceed the levels of performance from first-party lenses; they’re usually significantly cheaper too. If you like wide lenses and have been eyeing the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 or the Sony 16-35mm f2.8 G Master, you need to see the video we have for you after the break.

“You’re just trying to lift her legs up higher to make her skirt shorter, aren’t you?”
It’s amazing how quickly what seems like a perfectly comfortable, fun environment turns into hostile territory for women in an instant by men making what they think are innocuous comments, like this one.
It started off as a normal enough day, with reasonable enough expectations. I needed to help the photographer I was assisting set up for studio portraits. That was one of my two main responsibilities: the other was keep the clients happy (one of his regulars, a law firm). A simple enough ask, which ultimately proved to be much more demanding than it should have been. People like to dismiss the importance of microaggressions (which exist in all forms, and for the course of this discussion, we’ll be talking about the ones women face with regularity).

August is usually the hottest month of the year for many places. But this August has been even hotter than usual thanks to all of the incredible photography gear deals. We’ve seen camera prices slashed, and we’ve seen deep discounts on lenses too. In this roundup, we will take a quick look at seven items that The Phoblographer’s readers have been buying. Looking at the photography gear list below, one thing is clear. We have a lot of readers who currently shoot with Sony. Fujifilm seems to be popular amongst our readership too, and for good reasons. Their cameras and lenses are stellar performers. We’re not surprised to see the Fujifilm X-H1 near the top of the items sold list thanks to the latest price cut it received ($999 w/grip), and with the Nikon trade-in program in full swing, it’s not a shocker that you folks have been showing more interest in the Nikon Z series of cameras either. Check out the most popular photography gear from August 2019 below.
