The SK Hynix Gold S31 Surprised Us in Capture One

Essentials is a series featuring products we’re currently lusting over in quick, easy to digest posts.

Modern cameras are becoming more powerful with every new release. While this is fantastic news, it can also create problems. One such issue is the ever-growing size of both RAW and JPEG files. Long gone are the days of 10Mb files. Now, we routinely deal with file sizes in the 60Mb or higher range. Owning gear that can handle and store such large files is now something that has to be considered more carefully. Thankfully, you can buy high capacity, speedy SSD’s without destroying your bank account. We were sent the SK Hynix Gold S31 SSD, and have been putting it through real-world tests. Will the SK Hynix Gold S31 SSD help you generate a more efficient workflow? Find out in our quick review.

Review: Lenovo Yoga A940 All-In-One PC (Is It for Photographers?)

The Lenovo Yoga A940 All-In-One Desktop is a feature-rich Surface Studio.

The Yoga A940 All-In-One Desktop PC is Lenovo’s more affordable take on the Microsoft Surface Studio 2 concept designed with photographers and creative professionals in mind. Like the Surface Studio 2, the Lenovo Yoga A940 features a double-hinged, high-resolution, touch screen display attached to a base unit that houses the All-In-One’s components. Unlike the Surface Studio, Lenovo actually integrated a dedicated keyboard tray and QI wireless charging pad into the Yoga A940’s base unit. This makes for an arguably neater design, particularly if you like to store everything away neatly when not in use. Lenovo also includes all of the peripherals with the Yoga A940, which include a wireless keyboard, wireless mouse, Bluetooth Active Pen, and a Content Creation Dial. The Content Creation Dial is Lenovo’s spin on Microsoft’s Surface Dial, an optional accessory for the Surface Studio 2 that costs US $99.99. All of this adds up to a compelling All-In-One desktop solution, but how’s it fare under real-world use? Let’s find out.

Using Wondershare Recoverit 8.0 for SD Card Data Recovery

If you own a digital camera, an Android device, an MP3 player, or any other electronic device with extended memory, then you know how important the integrity of your SD card is.

Ideally, SD cards help us extend the memory of a device and transfer data seamlessly across multiple sources. While this is an important function, it also makes them vulnerable to data loss. Chances are that you might end up losing your important files from SD cards out of the blue. Don’t worry – you can still get them back using a reliable SD card data recovery tool. Although there are numerous data recovery tools in the market, only a handful of them actually work. If you are also new to data recovery, then you should know about Recoverit. It is one of the most trusted and accessible tools that is even used by leading experts. Recently, the application has released a new update that offers a wide range of advanced features. Let’s get to know more about the SD card data recovery feature of the tool.

Yakub Merchant’s Street Photography Emphasizes People Through Their Windows

All images by Yakub Merchant. Used with Creative Commons Permission.

Do you ever wonder how many of the personal projects you find most interesting were sparked by a spontaneous idea? I sometimes do, and today’s featured set of portraits is definitely a case in point. Taken by London-based photographer Yakub Merchant while on assignment, it was most likely just an idea he shelved for later as he was shooting for work. While Yakub was working as a still photographer on a film set in India, he noticed all these people watching the scenes from a vantage point in their homes. As I imagine it, Yakub took interest and began taking their portraits in between shots, eventually ending up with a nice collection for an aptly titled set called Windows.

The 5 Best Laptops For Photographers: 14″ and Below (Mid 2017)

The laptop market, and computing in general really, is constantly changing with new processors, updated batteries, more color accurate displays. It can be hard for a photographer to wade through all of that when it comes time to purchase your next mobile photo processing machine, and so today we have decided to take a look at the current state of the market to make some recommendations regarding what options out there are currently the best options for photographers.

There are a lot of laptops out there though, and not everyone is looking for the same things, so for this post we are focusing our attention on laptops with a screen size of 14-inches or less. These laptops are the most common for photographers who travel with their gear, as larger laptops are usually more of an issue to travel with. So with this one caveat about size (we plan on talking about 15″ and up in another post), here are our selections for the top laptops on the market right now for photographers.  Continue reading…

Portrait Photography Tip: Use Reflections off of Buildings to Add Extra Punch to a Portrait

If you’re a portrait photographer who loves to shoot in natural light and who also lives in a big city, here’s a great tip for you. Tall buildings on cities are often reflecting light off of one another and therefore creating a type of specular light. Imagine it sort of like sunlight being reflected off of a mirror. This reflected light acts like a natural photographic reflector and therefore gives subjects a bit of a spotlight look.

So what’s so great about this light?

Instagram is Coming to Windows Phone, Just in Time for Nokia’s New Lumia Phones

Screen Shot 2013-10-22 at 9.03.54 AM

Well the really big news today if you’re a Windows Phone user is that Instagram is coming to your OS–and that now means that you’ll have both Hipstamatic and Instagram.

If you’re considering the Windows OS, then Nokia has two new offerings for you. The new phones are the Lumia 1520 and the Lumia 1320. The 1520 has a 20MP sensor–which is bigger than the 920 but not as big as the 1020. Both phones have a 6 inch display, Qualcomm quad-core Snapdragon 800 chipset, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal flash storage, and a microSD card slot for memory expansion. The 1520 will come in at $749.

The 1320 will sport a 5MP imaging sensor (don’t ask us why), dual core processor, and a six inch display. It’s price tag is a more conservative $339.

First Impressions: Nokia Lumia 925

Though it isn’t the flagship device that the Nokia Lumia 1020 is, the 925 still packs a sweet camera and Nokia’s Pro Camera App–which allows the user to have full manual control over the camera sans the aperture. Being a photography website, we had to check this one out. Complete with a Carl Zeiss lens, 8.7MP 1/3 inch sensor, f2 aperture, full manual controls, dual LED flash, and a couple of key apps to start with, the camera on this phone is one of its major selling points. But besides that, worthy of note is the fact that this is a Windows Phone, has a 4.5″ AMOLED display, and a Dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ S4 processor.

At the time of publishing this piece, we’ve had the phone for a couple of days–and we’re actually warming up to it very closely.

JPEGmini, the Tool That Shrinks Your JPEGs, Is Now Available for Windows

JPEGmini website screenshot

JPEGmini has been around for a while now, as a web-interface as well as a standalone app for Mac OS. The clever software that shrinks your JPEG files up to five times from their original size without compromising image quality ist now available as a standalone app for Windows as well. The great thing about JPEGmini is that it creates 100% compatible JPEG files, but uses a special compression algorithm to reduce file size even further, without degrading perceptional image quality. We’re not sure what wizardry they’re using, but you can learn more about it on their website.

JPEGmini can be purchased for US-$ 19.99 via the JPEGmini website or from B&H Photo.
