Today is a sad, sad day for many Canon users. Photo Rumors is reporting that the 7D Mk II’s sensor seems very subpar in comparison to many of the latest DSLRs and APS-C sensors. According to DxOMark the 7D Mk II, which received a modest megapixel bump from the earlier version should have performed amazingly given Canon’s history of innovation. Unfortunately, the sensor here is on par with that of much older cameras. In fact, the sensor from the Nikon D300s outperforms it in some ways.
To put this in perspective, the D300s was one of the first cameras that we reviewed on the site. That was almost five years ago.
More after the jump.
According to the company’s conclusions, the sensor only really does exceptionally well at higher ISOs–and henceforth excellent for sports and low light shooting. Their conclusions state:
“On paper, the Canon EOS 7D Mk II looks to be a solid choice for sports and action photographers, but its sensor performance is somewhat behind the best in class, at least at low ISOs. Relatively high noise, less discriminating color, and below-average DR at base ISO all continue to hold back Canon sensors against rivals, but thatâs not the case at higher sensitivities. In fact, when light levels fall, the Canon EOS 7D Mk II performs competitively, even surpassing rivals slightly. If Canon could only address performance at base and low ISO, the EOS 7D Mk II would make a thoroughly convincing all-round choice, but in this category the Sony A77 IIÂ looks to be the more compelling option.”
Interestingly enough though when it comes to sensor scores, the Sony A77 Mk IIÂ and the Nikon D7100 both seem to best Canon in color depth and dynamic range. In fact, Nikon’s offering even outperforms the other two in the high ISO category. To that end, Nikon also considers the D7100 to be the successor to the D300s.
We have little doubt that this will hurt Canon’s sales. As far as customer service, support (via lenses and third party units) is concerned there is no qualm from many pros.
