Canon has some wonderful gear in its portfolio. The company has been introducing wonderful options for photographers who want performance at a good price. It appears that Canon is now keen on launching a lens that will be considered ‘world’s first.’
In a new report from Canon Rumors, the company may launch a new lens that will be important for photographers. While Canon Rumors talks about a second lens, there are not enough details about the same. The report only states that a new lens will come, but what it could be, we aren’t sure.
This news comes at a time when articles about RF 24-70mm f2L IS have surfaced online. The RF 24-70mm f2L is said to be announced in August or September, and will likely weigh less than the current RF 28-70mm.
Coming back to the second ‘world’s first lens’, Canon could be working on a fast zoom, which could rival Sony’s FE 50-150mm f2 GM. So Canon may attempt something similar. Or, they may introduce a 70-180mm f2or a similar fast telephoto zoom that would complete a natural pairing with the 24-70mm f2L. This may give Canon shooters something with no direct equivalent anywhere on the market. This alone can help earn the “world’s first” label.
Since the announcement, the community have been thinking of ambitious offers. For instance, some models include the following options:
- A 300-800mm f4.5-8 to counter Sony’s popular 400-800mm
- A 12-24mm f2 range for astrophotography and landscape work
- A 600mm f4 with an innovative built-in teleconverter
In addition to these, Canon can also deliver a tilt-shift lens with autofocus. The company’s TS-E offerings have been largely manual focus, and so, an AF lens could represent a technological leap in Canon’s portfolio. This will also be an important move, earning a “world’s first” designation. No one has attempted a lens of this nature before, and Canon is long overdue to bring its TS-E range into the RF era.
Since the APS-C lineup lacks lenses, there is also a genuine interest in some offering from the company. In that regard, a genuinely fast, high-quality RF-S prime or zoom would send photographers in a frenzy.
Whatever may be the case, Canon’s future seems pretty exceptional at the moment. It remains to be seen what they offer in 2026, but for now, the world’s first RF 24-70mm f2L is apparently just the opening act.
