That abandoned gas station or crumbling old house way out of town could be one of the best spots for astrophotography if you want to get some cool star trail or Milky Way snaps.

So, you’ve finally decided to do some astrophotography and nail one of those gorgeous star trail and Milky Way photos. If you did your homework, you already know one crucial element in this kind of photography: location, location, location. You’ll need a spot far enough from the city so there’s no light pollution that could cloud your long exposure. Somewhere with an interesting foreground would also be great. For photographer Brendan van Son, it was a creepy ghost town. The results, however, were worth the scare!

Fujifilm Releases X-T2 and X-H1 Firmware Updates, Delays GFX and X-Pro2 to July

Fujifilm has two new firmware updates and a new ETA for others

Today, Fujifilm has announced the availability of the latest firmware updates for two of their flagship cameras, the [amazon_textlink asin=’B01I3LNMAM’ text=’X-T2′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’9224b3bd-6f22-11e8-bca9-8d084a134e54′], and [amazon_textlink asin=’B079PTRNKK’ text=’X-H1′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’9991a42d-6f22-11e8-b5bf-e93dd8465fc9′]. This comes after the updates were initially delayed by several weeks following issues that arose when the company originally attempted to release the X-T2 firmware. Those issues have since been resolved and along with the fixed X-T2 firmware version 4.10, the X-H1 also gets a fresh update to version 1.10.

But it was not all good news today from Fujifilm,. The company also announced they would be pushing the firmware updates to their [amazon_textlink asin=’B01MZARM64′ text=’GFX 50s’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’1cc3c2fd-6f23-11e8-a847-79822557fdd4′] and X-Pro2 cameras to July. Originally those updates were expected to be released at some point in June following the X-T2 and X-H1 updates, but now for unknown reasons, Fujifilm has decided to push them back. Fujifilm did not indicate when in July to expect those updates, only that they would come in July. So, the [amazon_textlink asin=’B01A8DUR74′ text=’X-Pro2′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’25296b4d-6f23-11e8-ac41-2f4f94c5f60d’] version 5.0 update and the GFX 50s version 3.10 update could be available in as little as 3 weeks to as far out as 7 weeks.

As well, it appears that there will be another update in July for the X-H1, version 4.20, which will add the ‘select folder’ and ‘create folder’ feature originally expected to be fixed in version 4.1 but was instead removed. It appears as if something with that feature was causing problems on the X-H1 and the firmware update version 4.2, coming in July, will include a patch to restore that functionality in working order. So don’t get too comfy X-H1 owners, it appears another update is coming up real quick.

I guess we can expect the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f5.6E PF ED VR to come at Photokina 2018

So if all the stars align just right, I think one of the big announcements we’re going to get this year from Nikon will be the new Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f5.6E PF ED VR that they’re announcing the development of today. This lens is designed to be a “lightweight” 500mm prime lens for photographers who want something like that for their big, heavy, clunky DSLR camera. This announcement is only that the lens is being developed. Why? If I really had to guess, it’s to tease photographers to let them know that something big is coming from Nikon later on this year. And it’s a whole lot better than what Kodak has been doing with teasing us about the existence of Ektachrome recently.
