The Fujifilm GFX 50R: What We Would Like to See

There have been many reports over the last year regarding the supposed Fujifilm GFX 50R; here is what we would like to see.

You have all no doubt heard about Fujifilm’s GFX mirrorless medium format system, and its launch body, the GFX 50s (read our GFX 50s Review). The camera is no larger than your average professional-level DSLR but it packs an impressive 51.4 megapixel medium format sensor. The only real downside to the system is that it’s rather expensive, but some reports from the last year have indicated that it’s possible a more affordable option may be coming from Fujifilm at Photokina in the form of a newly minted Fujifilm GFX 50R. Fujifilm Releases X-T2 and X-H1 Firmware Updates, Delays GFX and X-Pro2 to July

Fujifilm has two new firmware updates and a new ETA for others

Today, Fujifilm has announced the availability of the latest firmware updates for two of their flagship cameras, the [amazon_textlink asin=’B01I3LNMAM’ text=’X-T2′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’9224b3bd-6f22-11e8-bca9-8d084a134e54′], and [amazon_textlink asin=’B079PTRNKK’ text=’X-H1′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’9991a42d-6f22-11e8-b5bf-e93dd8465fc9′]. This comes after the updates were initially delayed by several weeks following issues that arose when the company originally attempted to release the X-T2 firmware. Those issues have since been resolved and along with the fixed X-T2 firmware version 4.10, the X-H1 also gets a fresh update to version 1.10. Continue reading…

Following Botched Rollout, Fujifilm Postpones X-T2, X-H1 and X-Pro2 Updates

Fujifilm ran into some issues with the implementation of the X-T2 Firmware and they have rolled it back

One of the downsides to constant firmware updates is the reality that sometimes they cause more problems than they solve, which is exactly what the problem was with Fujifilm’s latest [amazon_textlink asin=’B01I3LNMAM’ text=’X-T2′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’4067b420-6441-11e8-b525-b786673fddf5′] firmware this month. It was so bad that Fujifilm actually rolled back the firmware, a smart move to minimize those affected, but that in turn ended up with the postponement of the X-H1 and [amazon_textlink asin=’B01A8DUR74′ text=’X-Pro2′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’490d4c35-6441-11e8-af03-01b307349b3c’] firmware updates that were supposed to be shortly following the X-T2 update at the end of this month. Here Is What Fujifilm Needs to Do with X-Trans IV; My Wish List

It’s about time for an X-Trans upgrade in the Fujifilm X-Series

As was widely publicized when Fujifilm launched their new X-H 1 a while back, their current X-Trans sensor technology dates back to the launch of the X-pro 2. It is a fine sensor, and the X-Processor Pro which accompanies it is solid as well. But in today’s world tech moves fast and three years is a long time. So we can probably expect the next generation of X-Trans to be coming soon. As such, I wanted to take a minute to talk about some of the things on my X-Trans IV wish list.

Use this Hack To Trick Lightroom Into Letting You Use The New Fujifilm Eterna Film Simulation

If you shoot Fuji and want to try out the new Eterna Film Simulation, try this!

We still don’t know if Fujifilm will bring the Eterna Film Simulation to the other X-Trans III based cameras. There has been some hinting that the X-T2 at the very least may get it, but for now, there is no official confirmation that any other cameras will be getting it. So if you want to give Fujifilm’s Cinema Film Simulation a try you will either need to go out and buy an X-H1, or you can give this hack a try.

Fujifilm Releases New Firmware Updates for X-E3 and X-Pro2

Fujifilm has released a new firmware that fixes an X-Pro2 bug and brings added GPS features to the X-E3.

The other edge of the double-edged sword that is Fujifilm’s strategy of constantly updating and upgrading their cameras through firmware updates is that there will be bugs that make it through the QA process here or there. Sometimes more severe than others, and sometimes rather benign or just more annoying than anything else.

The good thing is that because the company has such an efficient firmware update process and workflow internally, generally these issues are not around for long. That is the case with an odd issue which plagued the [amazon_textlink asin=’B01A8DUR74′ text=’X-Pro2′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’26b8283f-fa20-11e7-98d4-c3cf92dea97d’] after its update to firmware version 4.0 at the end of last month. Additionally, Fujifilm also released a new firmware for the [amazon_textlink asin=’B0759G8F8N’ text=’X-E3′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’2df9e9e9-fa20-11e7-8d13-35c74cbce81f’] which fixes some small bugs that were causing issues with that camera, as well as introduced a new GPS related feature.

Fujifilm Firmware Updates Incoming, Including Major Update to X-Pro2

Some of the other big news announced by Fujifilm today beyond the new X-E3 and the lenses was the announcement of some major firmware updates coming down the pipe for the X-Series cameras as well as the GFX50S.

Among those, probably the camera getting the biggest boost to its performance and capabilities is the X-Pro2. According to Fujifilm’s announcement, the X-Pro2 will be getting 4K video as well as the improved AF algorithm included in the X-E3. This is huge for the X-Pro2, which until the time this firmware is released was the only X-Trans III based camera without 4K video capabilities despite being the most expensive camera in the system.

The Best Fujifilm Cameras For Working In Low Light

We recently did a post where we recommended our favorite cameras from each brand for low light performance – mix of low light AF and high ISO image quality. But now that we have talked about all of the brands on a market level, we wanted to dive into the individual brands to talk about the low light performance from their cameras – today we start with Fujifilm. Wait What?! Reports Indicate Fujifilm X-E3 May Not Have D-Pad

If you have ever used a Fujifilm camera over the last several years, you will know how integral the d-pad has been to the control layout of the camera. Not only was this how you would navigate the menus, but this was also a whole array of function buttons that you could set in the menu. Which makes the revelation in some recent reports that the upcoming Fujifilm X-E3 will not have a d-pad at all.

One aspect of the X-E3 that has been reported for some time now is that it will have the AF joystick that the [amazon_textlink asin=’B01I3LNMAM’ text=’X-T2′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’d561c88b-8c10-11e7-ae49-c555c0be1e66′] and X-Pro2 enjoy, and more recent reports indicate that it is expected to have a touch screen as well, something the [amazon_textlink asin=’B01A8DUR74′ text=’X-Pro2′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’5de460e3-8c11-11e7-92d4-2d84f4fd7e8b’] lacks.

Is Fujifilm Holding Out On X-Pro2 Owners?

One of the biggest enigmas surrounding the Fujifilm [amazon_textlink asin=’B01A8DUR74′ text=’X-Pro2′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’c774263a-68b0-11e7-9fa6-b53a005a413e’] is the omission of 4K video. Initially, it seemed that this was to do with not having the necessary heat sink to dissipate the heat produced, like the X-T2 was able to have, and that reasoning made a lot of sense–at least that’s what EIC Chris Gampat was told by Fujifilm’s reps. However, that sort of flew out the window when the smaller [amazon_textlink asin=’B01N10DKLK’ text=’X-T20′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’ce87f9bc-68b0-11e7-847a-851b519712cd’] came out and it also had 4K video, again, without the beefy heatsink the X-T2 featured.

So, the question is, could the X-Pro 2 get 4K video, even a limited 4K video recording mode, through a firmware update that essentially gave it a similar 4K mode to that of the X-T20? The sensor and processor can obviously handle it, and I don’t know if I would believe that the X-Pro2 couldn’t dissipate the heat from a line-skipping based 4K video mode as well as the smaller X-T20 could. Which One: Fujifilm X100F or Fujifilm X-Pro2 with Fujifilm 23mm F2?

Looking at specs one couldn’t help but notice that [amazon_textlink asin=’B01MUC97VK’ text=’Fujifilm’s X100F’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’37b45670-3648-11e7-9d78-dbcdbb9f27e4′] and X-Pro2 feature a lot in common. Both have Fuji’s new 24mp sensor, both are rangefinder inspired, both have hybrid optical and electronic viewfinders, and both have (or can have in the case of the [amazon_textlink asin=’B01A8DUR74′ text=’X-Pro2′ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’48c2a387-3648-11e7-96f3-c7eff5194d39′]) a [amazon_textlink asin=’B01KNXOCO8′ text=’23mm F2 lens’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’527ae3e2-3648-11e7-ac08-f761c87933ad’]. So with all of this in mind one would not be that out of line to wonder which setup is the better option, and today we are here to answer that question.

Picking Specialized Cameras vs Do It All Cameras

There is this epidemic in the photography industry right now where everyone wants every camera to do everything better than every other camera for a lower price. This is why you always see walls of complaint comments when new cameras are announced, it does this well but not that, or lacks in this one feature that so and so really wanted. It’s just the reality of a camera, some will fit better for certain people and certain uses better than others – and let’s remember, virtually no one is making a ‘bad’ camera these days (at least if we are talking about the traditional camera makers). Fujifilm Launches New Graphite Edition X-Pro2, X-T2, and XF 23mm F2

Fujifilm is following their own roadmap from previous generations and has announced special ‘graphite’ silver versions of their latest X-Trans III based cameras, the X-Pro 2, X-T2 as well as a 23mm F/2 R WR to match.

In terms of specifications neither the X-Pro 2 or X-T2 Graphite editions come with any spec or performance improvements, with the difference being strictly aesthetic. This will no doubt irk some photographers, given the slight price premium, but this is not the first time we have seen something like this from Fujifilm, so it should not be all that surprising.
