To help our readers get the most out of the best camera gear, we’ve been working behind the scenes to update several of our most popular editorial buying guides. Today, we’re announcing that we’ve updated our guide to the Best 50mm Lens for Sony cameras, and you can check it out at this link. But to help you understand our changes, we’re giving you a rundown of our choices here.
How We Chose the Best 50mm Lens for Sony
We know the Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8 is an old lens, but we’re still pretty smitten with it. It’s also technically not a 50mm lens, but it’s easy to lump it in with all the others. In many ways, it’s better than a 50mm. We’re choosing it for its durability, image quality, small size, etc. At a certain point, camera manufacturers forgot that mirrorless cameras were supposed to be small. This lens, being around a decade old, adheres to that idea.
Well, that, and it’s often found for under $1,000 on Amazon. It’s a lens we still use to this day and that we often find to be really solid as an overall choice because of how much the image quality has endured.
A Word About All the Rest
For the record, Sony also has a ton of 50mm lenses that they make natively. In fact, there are eight of them — and we’ve got those all rounded up right here.
We’ve also included the new Sony 50mm f1.4 G Master, Sony 50mm f1.2 G Master, Rokinon 50mm f1.4, and the Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art lens. Generally speaking, the first-party lenses autofocus much better than the others. In fact, Tamron lenses autofocus best with Sony because they’re partially owned by Sony.
Why Trust Us
The guide includes a table of contents, insights in our ethics, an understanding of how to use the guide, buyer tips, and original product and sample images shot by our staff.
So when we say these are the best, we’re saying it because we’ve actually tested the products and we’ve got the reviews to back it up. I mean, would you trust a vegetarian to tell you what the best steak is if they’ve never tried it? You certainly wouldn’t — and you most likely wouldn’t trust anyone that hasn’t tried a product before. In fact, if we haven’t tried a product, we don’t feature them with prominence in our roundups.
We encourage you to go check out our update when you can.
