Now that it is the winter and Wedding photographers are in their off-season across much of the northern hemisphere, many are taking stock of their current kits. This is the time to look at what else is on the market, look into buying new gear, and trying out the latest technological achievements. Fujifilm made big waves in 2016 with the X-Pro2 and X-T2 making the X-Series a system that many wedding professionals or semi-professionals could be considering as they decide if their current kit can get them through another season.
Today we wanted to take a look at the X-Series from a wedding photography perspective. What cameras and lenses should be considered for the wedding professional looking to build out the ultimate wedding kit with Fujifilm? Well, that is a subjective question, but here are our picks.
Kit 1: The Prime Enthusiast
In wedding photography, as with every other photographic niche, there are those who prefer shooting with prime lenses and those who prefer shooting with zooms. Our first kit is for you prime shooting enthusiasts, and boy does Fujifilm have some great options for you in their XF lens lineup.
The Camera: Fujifilm X-Pro2
The X-Pro2 is one of Fujifilm’s flagship cameras, sharing that distinction with the X-T2. It features a classic rangefinder style design and features a unique OVF/EVF hybrid viewfinder that really sets it apart from any other camera you may be considering. It pairs perfectly with prime lenses from Fujifilm’s lineup and is both much smaller and lighter than any DSLR kit you may currently be rocking. It also, thanks to the latest Firmware update, features impressive AF performance.
The Lenses
There are a ton of great lenses in Fujifilm’s XF lens lineup, including several great prime lenses that make a lot of sense for this prime enthusiasts kit.
- XF 23mm F/1.4 (Our Review)
- XF 35mm F/2Â (Our Review)
- XF 56mm F/1.2Â (Our Review)
- XF 90mm F/2Â (Our Review)
These are some of the best lenses that Fujifilm has to offer, let alone just in the prime category. So if you are looking for a primarily prime kit from Fujifilm, these lenses are where we suggest starting your search.
Kit 2: The Zoom Freak
If you aren’t all that into primes and prefer to just have a couple of lenses on you to handle a variety of situations than we have some great suggestions for you as well. Fujifilm’s lineup of pro-grade zooms is not as extensive as the DSLR kits you may be coming from, but the options that are available are stellar performers. So let’s get into it.
The Camera: Fujifilm X-T2
The X-T2 and X-Pro2 can almost be interchanged at whim, but one area that the X-T2 does do a little better in is AF tracking and weight balance with larger lenses. That said, if you prefer the rangefinder design, the X-Pro2 is still a great choice for this kit as well. Another benefit to the X-T2, if you like to shoot video as well, is that the X-T2 also records a beautiful 4K video file.
The Lenses
As I noted above, Fujifilm’s zoom lens options are not quite as plentiful as you may be used to, but the lenses that we mention below are incredible performers, and will be perfect for your wedding photography needs.
- XF 16-55mm F/2.8 (Our Review)
- XF 50-140mm F/2.8 (Our Review)
- XF 10-24mm F/4 (Our Review)
The above lenses should have you covered really well from a wedding photography perspective. You could also maybe grab the 100-400mm, but that is more of a sports/wildlife lens unless you are shooting the wedding ceremony from a couple blocks away.
Kit 3: The All Arounder
Ok, this is the kit that most of you will be more interested in, a kit containing both zooms and primes, basically what we would consider to be the best all around Fujifilm wedding kit currently. That is to say, this is an incredible kit for any form of photography, but particularly from the wedding perspective this kit has it all.
The Camera: Fujifilm X-T2
You could put either the X-Pro2 or X-T2 here, but given its 4K capabilities and slightly more advanced AF functionality we gave the X-T2 the nod here. Also, since it has a battery grip, it makes much more sense to a wedding photographer who will no doubt be shooting for hours and hours at a time.
The Lenses
As noted above, for this kit we are putting together the absolute best Fujifilm based wedding kit we can think of, so strap in and get ready for some optical sorcery.
- XF 16mm F/1.4 (Our Review)
- XF 23mm F/1.4 (Our Review)
- XF 56mm F/1.2Â (Our Review)
- XF 50-140mm F/2.8 (Our Review)
It may not be a large of a kit as you were expecting. But we feel like this would be a great wedding kit, especially if you had two bodies. Throw the 56mm F/1.2 on one, and the 50-140mm on another and you are good to go for some incredible portraits with the prime, and ready for anything candid with the 50-140mm.
