When we think of Nepal, we think about temples and tradition, high mountains and wide plains. There’s no doubt that this landlocked nation is beautiful, but the fact that it’s also home to one of the world’s most polluted cities slightly mars its reputation.
Full frame mirrorless camera: I genuinely feel like in every portal, group, and forum that I step into there is a conversation about all this. It’s been a long time coming. Leica was the first to the scene nearly 10 years ago with the Leica M9. Then Sony came along with the Sony a7 and Sony a7r. Heck, even Hasselblad and Fujifilm released mirrorless cameras with bigger sensors than full frame 35mm. And then this year, Nikon and Canon finally decided that they’d step up and give us the Nikon Z6, Nikon Z7, and the Canon EOS R. It’s about time. Barring a few players, the world of DSLRs and APS-C cameras was starting to get kind of dull. Combine this with the fact that Apple, Google, Samsung and Huawei are trying to give everyone a reason to not buy a bigger camera and you’ve got a photography world that needs to modernize.
The north of Vietnam is home to some of the best, unique natural views in this Southeast Asian country: majestic mountains, lush rice terraces, and astounding karst formations that couldn’t be found anywhere else. These landscape views always make for great pictures but while most visitors would take shots at eye-level, Sylvain Deffaix elevated things up a notch – literally – and captured places in this region from a bird’s eye view.
The Fujifilm XT3 (or as they call it, the Fujifilm X-T3) is the company’s latest evolution to their SLR style camera body designed to be a workhorse for many photographers. Despite a whole lot of great and absolutely fantastic things built into the camera, I personally am wondering what Fujifilm’s goal is here with the idea of the X Trans sensor and Film Simulations. One of the reasons why I was so smitten with the X Pro 1 was the fact that it delivered images that really looked like well shot and developed film. To some extent, the Fujifilm XT2 did too but only really with Acros. With the latest iteration, the Fujifilm X-T3, the company is delivering a new 26.2MP X Trans Sensor that delivers the most beautiful colors of any APS-C sensor that we’ve seen. But at the same time, the film simulations just don’t feel right.
For anyone who’s used to seeing high-rises made of steel and glass and concrete, and wooden structures painted in various different colors every single day; Lanzarote, the fourth largest island in the Canaries, would be a refreshing sight to behold as experienced by Birgit Schlosser. As is the case in the more popular Santorini and its own white structures, all of the houses in Lanzarote are painted white on the outside due to strict implementation by local authorities. Pops of color appear only on painted shutters which are either green in the countryside or blue by the sea.
We all love learning new things, but when you can learn from one of the industries best you need to jump at the chance, and strike while the iron is hot.
Ah, Bangkok. Just like any other major Southeast Asian city, it’s bustling, often crowded and noisy, and filled with sights you can’t see anywhere else: floating markets, temples, street food carts at every turn, tuk tuks, and a whole lot more.
In our previous features, we’ve seen New York-based photographer and filmmaker Franck Bohbot capture the beauty of New Orleans at night, and dreamy winter scenes in the Big Apple. Today, we showcase yet another of his interesting photography projects: a portrait project that aims not only to introduce us to New York City’s indie booksellers, but also show us the character of the bookstores themselves.
It’s a trap, don’t fall for it. The world of digital noise makes it easy to lose focus and blur your vision. It was never so tempting to mistake publicity for value. Facebook and Instagram do not care about your photography when they set or change rules. As useful and important as these platforms are, their sole purpose is a purely commercial operation. Specifically to make you come back as often as possible to spend more time there. I did not fall in love with photography to satisfy an algorithm whose primary purpose is to create more advertising revenue. I am the owners of the process and the purpose.
