Holiday 2012: A Photography Backpack Gift Guide

Backpacks are something that every photographer is going to need or want at some point. Backpacks allow you to carry your gear comfortably, on your back, spreading out the weight evenly on your body. Backpacks also allow for extra security when you have to carry other things and you need both your arms free.

Here a list of back packs that can be used to suite a variety of condition.

Holiday 2012: Recommended Lenses for Nikon DSLRs

There are a lot of lens choices out there and I hope to make it a bit easier for the generous gift giver to choose the right lens.  First of all you have to find out what kind of photography your special person is into. Is he/she into landscapes, portraiture, lowlight or maybe all the above?
You can probably find this out by what your photographer typically shoots, if all you see are nasty close up photos of spiders then we can assume a macro lens would be the best bet. Know your photographer by knowing his subject or passion.

Holiday 2012: Recommended Bags from Think Tank Photo

The holiday season is upon us and one thing that every photographer needs (yourself included) is a solid camera bag. One that will withstand the abuse of daily life, be comfortable to carry when loaded with equipment, and most importantly, one that is stylish, yet understated and discreet to keep your gear safe while traveling. Our regular readers know that we are fans of Think Tank Photo’s products as they are quite often the best option in their respective categories. To make things even better they are offering free shipping on orders from now until December 31st, and on top of this, when you order through us, anything over $50 is going to get you a freebie from Think Tank as well.

Definitely take some time to browse through their extensive product list here, but in the meantime these are some of my recommendations from some of their various categories of products.

Cheap Photo: The Return of the Fujifilm X Pro 1 Lens + Body Deal

The Fujifilm X Pro 1 lens bundle deal has returned from the grave.

Holiday 2012: Recommended Tripods (No Matter What Your Needs)

Peter-West-Carey-Utah2012-1020-6429

Unless your hands are as stable as a turntable, you would benefit from employing a tripod. For the longest time I shunned tripods because I thought they would cramp my style and freedom. Freedom is popular these days and I didn’t want to hand it over to a silly, three-legged device.

But it turns out tripods can really help certain types of photography. Landscape is one of them, so is portraiture. Products, architecture…just about everything except underwater (although I was tempted to try that on my last trip to Hawaii). If you’re thinking of picking up a tripod or two, let me give you some suggestions based on pocketbook size and intended use. Options listed here range from $3 to $1550.

Remember How We Said Helios Lenses Are Very Sought After? Check Out This Gem!

One of our readers saw our post on the Helios factory re-opening and wanted to share the fact with us that he’s selling his Helio 40 85mm f1.5. We like helping out readers when we can, so we decided that we’d show you this gem. I’ve seen this lens personally as quite a few of my friends have it; but they’re not parting with theirs quite yet. It is extremely sharp and on a 5D Mk II or Mk III can look really quite lovely.

If you’re interested, you can click the hyperlinked lens and make a bid. If you’re interested in more of what the company has to offer though, check out what eBay has to offer.
