Nikon has launched some truly exceptional cameras over the decades. Its Nikon FM2 was loved by many serious photographers who were shooting analog, and it was a sturdy device that is still the most sought-after amongst the younger generation. There is also the Nikon D750 and now the Z9, each of them the best camera in their respective fields. However, while we are in our mirrorless era, there seems to be a high demand for a particular DSLR from the company Nikon DF. Launched in 2013, this is one of the few cameras whose demand has not diminished over the years. Why? let’s have a look!
The Nikon Df is currently available on eBay at high prices. The body-only version is over $1,200, but the camera in limited-edition gold is $2,000. These prices are somewhat similar to the current Nikon cameras, such as the Z6 II or the Z50 II.
So, why is this camera a beloved figure almost a decade down the line? The first thing is its aesthetical appeal. The Nikon Df pays homage to Nikon’s film cameras, such as the FM and the FE. The camera has a retro design and features metal dials, which have a timeless appeal to them. In today’s day and age, as more and more people are gravitating toward rangefinder designs, it makes more sense why people are going after it. There is also the use of magnesium alloy, which makes the camera look premium, and it is certainly quite durable and robust in feel.

On the inside, the camera featured a powerful 16.2-megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor and an EXPEED 3 image processor. As we wrote previously, the camera was basically a mix of the Nikon D4 and D610 on the inside, providing exceptional images to photographers. For instance, continuous shoot speed of up to 5.5fps, a 1,230mAh battery, a great ISO range (100-12800, expandable to 50-25600), and, as we noted in our review, RAW file versatility allows one to easily recover details if they ever mess up.

However, what made the Nikon Df so interesting was that it was a camera purely for photographers. Today, you see cameras that are hybrid devices, offering up to 8K video functions and pushing aside the need for image-makers. The Df did not do that. In fact, it had a lack of video functions, which was initially seen as a drawback. However, in 2025, this has become one of the most appealing cameras 2025. Sure, the camera had its challenges back in the day, especially since it had a hefty price tag of $2,700 back then. But now, it appears the camera’s value is still the same. In addition, the Nikon Df can be used with vintage lenses such as the Nikon 50mm f1.2 AIS or the Nikon 50mm 1.8E, both of which allow one to get a distinct look and appeal.
The Nikon Df can still be utilized for genres such as street photography, portraits, weddings, or even fashion. It is a device that blends nostalgia with great image quality. You won’t pick a camera like this to get fast results, but as someone who wants to reconnect with the spirit of photography, which has been lost somehow over years of chasing higher pixel count and sterile image quality. After all, aren’t we all chasing to revive our love for the medium?
