Ergonomics
Here’s the Woolnut Leather Camera Strap attached to a Canon EOS R paired with the Canon RF 85mm f1.2 L USM lens. It’s a decently hefty camera and lens combo, but the padded Woolnut Leather Camera Strap made carrying it relatively comfortable even after a few hours.
The Woolnut Leather Camera Strap features a pair of shiny metal buckles on each end, which are used to adjust the strap’s length. Split rings are included on each end of the Woolnut Leather Camera Strap, which can be used to attach the strap to your camera. Depending on your camera, you may alternatively attach the strap directly, like we’ve done in the above image where the strap is attached to the Canon EOS R sans split ring.
The Woolnut Leather Camera Strap is available in two colors: black and cognac. And the Woolnut logo is subtly stamped onto the middle of the strap.
The ends of the Woolnut Leather Camera Straps, where the buckles are situated, are attached to the center portion of the strap using rivets. They do an excellent job holding the strap together. Wool felt is stitched onto the inside of the Woolnut Leather Camera Strap, with the very center portion being padded and covered with leather. This padded section is the strap’s primary contact point against your body when the strap is worn either around your neck or over your shoulder. The padding maintains comfort even when carrying heavy cameras.
Build Quality
Woolnut did a great job assembling their Leather Camera Strap. The center portion of the strap consists of wool felt stitched onto leather, with the very middle part being padded for comfort. The adjustable ends of the strap are riveted onto the center portion, adding to the overall durability of the strap. Unless you’re deliberately trying to cut the strap using a knife or other sharp objects, it’ll hold up very well and develop a beautiful patina over time.
Ease of Use
The Woolnut Leather Camera Strap is functionally identical to pretty much any other standard camera strap on the market. What sets it apart from the rest are the strap’s styling, the overall build quality, and the premium materials used. The included split rings make attaching the strap to a variety of cameras a breeze. Depending on your camera, you can use the included split rings to attach the strap to your camera or attach the strap to your camera directly. We used the rings when attaching the strap to a Leica M4 and Sony A7R IV, but attached the strap directly to the Canon EOS R sans split rings since it has wider strap openings than most cameras. The supple, full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather makes the strap comfortable to wear for even extended periods. The padded center portion of the strap also helps to maintain comfort when carrying heavier cameras and lenses. The wool and leather will hold up fairly well against the elements, and the leather should develop a beautiful patina over time.
Conclusion
Although the Woolnut Leather Camera Strap is very much a “standard” camera strap, it sets itself apart from the melange of adequate yet unremarkable camera straps often bundled with new cameras with its robust construction and well-appointed materials. Available in two colorways, the Woolnut Leather Camera Strap will fit the bill for style-conscious photographers looking to add some flair to their cameras. One area that may be a cause for concern for photographers who tend to perspire easily is how well the wool felt will hold up over time after repeated contact with perspiration. The vegetable-tanned full-grain leather, however, should develop a beautiful patina over time, pairing particularly well with vintage cameras.
