You must think and react fast in candid portraiture, and you need a lens that won’t get in your way
Candid photography has become more and more popular as the masses become more and more tone deaf to the look of cliché posed portraits. It’s a less perfect form of portraiture, but a truer to life one as well. But popularity and the techniques to capturing these candid images aside, what sort of lenses are best for candid photography? This is the question we hope to answer for you today, with the goal of pointing you in the direction of some gear that will make your life as a candid photographer easier.
The thing with candid photography is that you need to be able to react quickly to capture a shot as moments happen. Unlike in traditionally posed shoots where you can have someone repeat something over and over, with candids it’s most likely a one and done thing. This means you need to be prepared and ready to react in a split second, or even better, ready to anticipate moments before they happen. Having a lens that allows you to do this without getting in your way is key to having a good success rate.
One key to this is knowing your environment and knowing what the conditions will be like during the shoot. For example, if you know that the space you will be shooting it will be small, and mostly tight quarters, then you can go with a wider, fast prime that will allow you to capture moments close to you quickly and effortlessly. Alternatively, if you know the venue will be a larger room with more space, then a zoom lens with a fast aperture could be the better choice so you are able to capture moments as they happen around the venue, regardless of your proximity to them.
