If you’re feeling the need to immerse yourself in the beauty of the great outdoors and take some breath-taking photos in the process, we’ve got just the stuff for you. Today’s landscape photography inspiration is from Seattle-based Cody Cobb, whose impressive snaps are brimming with the colors, textures, and hues of the Pacific Northwest’s beautiful landscapes.
Once in a while, photographers and creatives find themselves giving in to the need to spend some time in nature. Not only is it effective as a relaxing time off and replenishing creative juices, but it also often leads to some compelling bodies of work. Cody, who works as a professional photographer and designer, is no exception. “For weeks at a time, Cobb wanders the American West alone in order to fully immerse himself in seemingly untouched wilderness,” he writes on his website bio. “This isolation allows for more sensitive observations of both the external landscape as well as the internal experience of solitude.”
The time spent alone in the expanse of ‘The Great American Outdoors’ have led to some of Cody’s most compelling landscape projects. Among these is Cascadia, a set whose namesake is the Pacific Northwest, one of the most geologically active regions in the planet. “My intent with these photographs is to capture a brief moment of stillness in the grand epochs of geological chaos,” he says of the series. It’s a three-part collection of photos that do not only showcase the beauty of the region’s woodlands, mountains, and coastlines. It’s also very much a testament to the emotional experience and connection with nature that keeps him going back.
Cody has put together his Cascadia sets using both film and digital cameras, and he actually used quite an impressive arsenal: Yashica T4, Voigtlander Bessa III, Mamiya 7II, Contax T3, Sony A7rii, and Sony RX1. For the film, he did well to choose Kodak Portra 400 to load in his cameras. Despite the variety of cameras he used, it’s amazing to see a consistency in the colors, tones, and details of each photo. This has effectively set the mood and look throughout the series.
