The buzz on the street is that Sigma has some FE lenses in the works.
It has been widely thought that Sigma will be finally entering the Sony full-frame mirrorless system with native lenses, but reports on how soon and what those lenses could be have been few and far between – until today.
According to a report over on Sony Alpha Rumors Sigma’s new native Sony FE mount lenses will be officially announced in February of 2018. The report goes on to indicate, based on information passed along by two separate sources, that Sigma’s plans currently for the FE lineup of lenses will be limited to Art series lenses.
An FE 35mm F1.4 Art would make a lot of sense as the first lens announced for this new FE lineup of Art lenses. It was, after all, the [amazon_textlink asin=’B00A35X6NU’ text=’35mm F1.4 Art’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’thephobl-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’43834207-e178-11e7-a13f-bd5e21c58bea’] that really kicked off Sigma’s recent run of form and the explosion in popularity of their Art lenses. That lens remains today as one of their most popular sellers and is a staple in many portrait photographers kits.
But it is important to remember these new Sigma lenses are going to be designed from the ground up to be Full Frame Mirrorless lenses for Sony’s FE system. This means that a potential FE 35mm F1.4 Art will not be a reskinned 35mm F1.4 Art with a built-in adapter. These lenses will be made for Sony, and should (we all hope) offer better AF performance than other adapted and third-party lenses to this point.
We will have to wait until February (or whenever the official announcement comes) but this is definitely exciting news for Sony photographers. An Art Series lens lineup specifically for the FE system has a ton of potential, so it will be really interesting to see what Sigma brings to the table.
