I went out tonight into Greenpoint (you know, where that show Girls is shot) and photographed near the new park at the Golden Hour with the Nikon D7100 and the 50mm f1.8 G. I’m really starting to like it more–the focus is snappy (but sometimes not accurate) and the color rendering is really great. But a part of me is still yearning for a full frame sensor and all that it can do.

But be sure to check out our High ISO samples and first impressions. Once again, these are JPEGs resized for the web because the raw files aren’t supported in Lightroom yet.

Today, for some odd reason, the Nikon P1000 point and shoot camera is being announced. Odd, you ask? The fact that it is a point and shoot isn’t such a big issue at all; but the fact that it’s a superzoom camera being marketed as one with a 125x optical zoom is what’s insane. Kudos to Nikon for being able to do something like this; but then you read the fine print (or in this case, print that’s not even in the press release) and see the bait and switch–this Nikkor lens is having its potential wasted by being placed in front of a 1/2.3 inch sensor.

Digital photography in my opinion has become too simple; and that’s fine if you’re a beginner but I also think that it breeds a number of bad habits based solely on human laziness. You may call it evolution, but in the world of communications and journalism there is the idea that as we create technology, we become the technology. So we end up just relying on it to do all the things for us. And indeed that is true–I still laugh at my old teachers who told me that I’d never bring a calculator while grocery shopping. These days, I simply order my groceries via Fresh Direct unless I need something specific that I can get a few blocks away.
