Though your camera’s light meter may be pretty darned good, it isn’t always perfect. If you’re a RAW shooter, then we all know that we can simply bring the images into Lightroom and work with them from there. But many people don’t do that and deserve to be shot and thrown into the street and made an example of and sometimes are puzzled by what their camera’s LCD is showing them. In a case like that, a dedicated Light meter is often the best solution unless you want to sit there and experiment after each shot and become frustrated.
Luxi is a brand new Kickstarter aimed at making the iPhone a much better light meter and to eliminate the need for a separate handheld meter. It connects to your phone and then seemingly through an app, it will tell you what the right exposure of your scene will be. The meter only measures incident light, which is best for really high contrast situations and when there is no best setting for metering an entire scene. Meters otherwise measure only reflected light–which isn’t always accurate for exposures. Unfortunately, it seems like the meter won’t be able to measure light from a flash or studio monolight–and that audience is the primary group of photographers who use light meters (myself included.)
