Carolin Unrath Captures the Unparalleled Joy of River Surfing

“This day was special,” the photographer Carolin Unrath admits. It was May 2020, and the world was grappling with the first few months of the pandemic. Longing for adventure and a break from the isolation of the previous weeks, she connected with the surfer Andreas Müllner and the producer Peter Scherb. Together, they made their way to Eisbach, the river surfing epicenter of Munich and a gathering place dating back to the 1970s

Is This Unique, Light Bag Adventure Ready? F-Stop AJNA 37L Review

Aluminum frame backpacks tend to make me regret my life choices as soon as I put them on. Often, the added structure isn’t worth the added weight. That’s not the case with the F-Stop AJNA, an adventure and travel backpack that has an aluminum frame so light I didn’t even notice it at first. Combined with a waist belt, the backpack helps distribute weight on the hips instead of the back and shoulders.

These Nightscapes by Paul Zizka Look Stunning

“The universe is telling you you’re not here for a very long time,” answers Paul Zizka when I queried why he places himself in many of his night landscape shots. He enjoys doing this to communicate the connection of mankind to the landscape on which we live. Some of his nightscapes look like they were taken on a different planet altogether, a testimony to the diverse Earth we inhabit but have yet to explore in detail.

Stian Klo Captures the Majestic Wildlife of the Kenyan Landscape

All photos by Stian Klo. Used with Creative Commons permission.

We’ve been following the trips of Norweigian adventure photographer Stian Klo for some time. Stian has been to some really picturesque locations, like the Finnish Lapland and Northern Italy. This time, we revisit his 2017 trip to Africa – a dream destination for intrepid travelers, adventure photographers, and wildlife photographers alike. With photos that showcase the fascinating wildlife and the vast landscapes it calls home, we can see that Stian achieved his goal for this adventure: “to embrace the adventure and not force the creative process in terms of photography.”

Quit your day job, pack your stuff up, put it in a backpack and go shoot adventure work–that’s the dream for many of you, right? Photographer Darren Hamlin lives the dream, so to speak. We’ve talked to him about his Northern Lights photos, but he’s much more than just a Northern Lights shooter. Darren also goes out shooting and hosts workshops–which makes him quite busy when it comes to business.

In fact, we talked to Darren about the business side of adventure photography. And most amazingly, he tells us that 90% of his time is spent not actually shooting.

A Tribute to Discomfort: Cory Richards Talks About his Photography in Inspiring Video

Video thumbnail for vimeo video - The Phoblographer

Cory Richards, adventurer and respected photographer for National Geographic, he has gone to great lengths–and heights–to get his iconic shots. He has climbed the highest mountains, explored the deepest oceans, attempted to break world records, even endured and survived a massive avalanche in a Himalayan mountain, and made lifetime friends in the most inaccessible regions of the world.

He has never had a formal education in photography but he has effectively used the craft as his voice, as his way of translating how he sees the world. And his images are not only stunning but also influential and powerful, which, he explains, root from getting out of his comfort zone and according to him, “observing what was happening around me and observing (the) richness that comes with struggle.”

In a new, inspiring video put together by Blue Chalk, Richards talks about why he goes to such extremes and how his efforts have make a huge impact on his work as an adventure and exploration photographer and an even more amazing storyteller. Entitled “A Tribute to Discomfort,” the 4-minute video is a nod to determination and to pushing oneself to be better at the craft that has the capacity to stir millions.

Watch it after the jump.
