Street photographers have always relied on a standard focal length for their visions: a good 35mm. It is small, sharp, and works wonders in a crowded place. While there are various 35mm lenses out there, we are looking at the ones that have performed admirably in our reviews. Is your lens on the list? Let’s dive in.
Leica 35mm f1.2

Designed for the manual focus system, M series, the Leica 35mm offers a spectacular build and a detailed scale. The lens is small, easy to use, and has a buttery smooth focusing system. Since it is designed for professionals, it also offers stunning images, closer focusing abilities than most rangefinder lenses, and some nice bokeh. There is also some wonderful sharpness throughout the frame. And the “micro-contrast pops,” offering some beautiful colors.
Nikon 35mm f1.2 Z S
Nikon has made fantastic lenses for the Z system, and the Nikon 35mm is one such offering. It comes with weather resistance, 11 aperture blades, and is really lightweight. It has a quick focusing system that is accurate, and “works for people of color with melanin in their skin” in low light. Street photographers will certainly like this. The lens also produces lots of character and colors in the images. The lens is also quite sharp, and has some nice background separation. It is a workhorse that everyone can easily depend on.
Panasonic S 35mm f1.8
Panasonic cameras are perfect for street photographers, and the Panasonic 35mm is an answer to those users. It weighs just 0.7lbs, has 9 aperture blades, and has a minimal design. The weather sealing is an add-on. The bokeh produced for this lens is delicious, and the autofocus works well in most situations. It is a lens that will not interfere with your shooting. Above all, it is priced well, making it a lovely offering.
Sony 35mm F1.8 FE

Sony’s 35mm comes with 11 elements in 9 groups, a 0.24x magnification, and some good weather resistance. Cost-effective, the 35mm has some simple control on the lens, and the focusing speed is quick. This also depends on the camera you are using. With AF-C mode, street photographers will certainly get some good results. The results are also crystal clean, with a good ratio of sharpness and a creamy bokeh when needed. The colors are also cinematic. As we added, “When you lock your camera to 3200K or 5500K, you’ll get incredibly cinematic colors and feelings. If I really had to describe it, I would tell you to think about watching the show The Americans but combining that with a bit of the look from Mad Men.”
Pergear 35mm F1.4
Another manual focus lens on the list, the Pergear 35mm f1.4, is a beautiful lens for purists. With a minimum focusing distance of 30cm and weighing 245g, the lens lacks weather resistance. Street photographers, thus, will have to be careful. However, the design is simple, with a focus ring to help. The focus peaking system can make things better. It’s selling points are sharpness, smooth bokeh, and some wonderful colors. As we added, “This full-frame lens delivers the image quality of photographers’ dreams. There are tons of Sony shooters who crave Leica-style image quality.”
7Artisans 35mm f2.8

Designed for photographers who like pancake lenses, the 35mm is a manual focus lens with 7 blades and costs under $500. It has a metal build, super lightweight, and lacks weather resistance. Designed for those who want to challenge themselves, it is compact, and can be adapted easily if you have the skill set. With Nikon’s color profiles, you get some truly nice images. For its price and its size, it performs admirably. As we added, “Functionally, turning the dials and rings all feel really wonderful and connect you to the experience of making images with intent.”
Canon RF 35mm f1.4 L VCM
Canon has recently moved to VCM motor for its lenses, and the RF 35mm f1.4 VCM is one such example. It has a minimum focusing distance of 0.28m and is a lens that Canon users will certainly like. It has a fast focusing system, thanks to the motor, and captures some really sharp photos. The bokeh is a good addition, and the colors are true to life. In addition, there is solid weather resistance. As we added, “The RF 35mm F.14 L was a great companion for shooting in the streets and in a gym, even when attached to the larger R1 body – allowing me to walk around for hours without being weighed down by the lens and camera’s combined heft.”
