Canon compact cameras dominated the market in the early 2000s. When the company transitioned to producing SLRs, it continued to gain the same fame. While compact cameras were considered a thing of the past about three years ago, the recent revival proves that no trend truly comes to an end. Among the various vintage cameras that people choose to buy, Canon’s point-and-shoot models seem to be in far greater demand. Today, we examine the popular models and the factors driving the sharp increase in prices.
Canon’s Rising Stars
A quick search on eBay showcases that certain models are far more popular than others. For instance, the SX740 HS, launched in 2018, costs between $500 and $1,100. This depends on the quality, condition, and whether it is paired with a memory card.

Other models, such as the IXY 650, ELPH 360, and the G7 X Mk II and III, are priced between $300 $1,200, respectively. The IXY 650 (2016) and ELPH 360 (2016) are compact cameras, each offering a zoom range of 12x. This proves that users who are unable to use their cellphones to make images of distant objects rely on these point-and-shoots.

On the other hand, models such as the G7X series, which are designed for serious photographers with their 1-inch sensor, are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. The camera offers 4K video and 24-100mm equivalent lenses. These are better suited for those who also dabble with videos. Moreover, older models such as the S95 (2010), Canon G9X (2015), are available between $300 to $550. In fact, the Canon PowerShot G12 (2010) can cost you anywhere between $500 $1000.

What is Driving the Trend?
For starters, some of these models are going viral on TikTok and Instagram, which drives their prices even higher. However, if you look at other models, such as the A800, IXUS 100, ELPH 135, and A3100, they can cost you below $150. The social media influence has propelled the surge in prices on eBay.
But there is also the scarcity and discontinuity of compact cameras, especially certain models, which further adds to the demand. Cult favourite cameras were not so expensive, say, five years ago, but now the demand has increased, and so sellers are charging premium prices. As someone said on Reddit, COVID has further driven up prices.
A few users on Reddit asked if it is “Canon tax.” This means that Canon gear retains its value better and can be resold at higher prices than compact cameras from other brands. Of course, Canon cameras give you distinct looks, but you can find something similar in Fujifilm or Nikon cameras.
Either way, the rising prices show that it is a good time to sell your camera, if you have one. However, if you want to buy a compact, consider local stores or other brands that offer similar specifications.
