When Canon ventured into the mirrorless market several years ago, its launches were not up to the standard set by Sony. After all, this would be the case since Sony had far more experience in the domain than Canon. However, Canon was not deterred, just like Nikon, which led them to create some great cameras over the years. But their recent developments have raised questions, with many pointing out the company’s shortcomings in helping photographers. Whatever decisions were made, they are now impacting the perspective of the company amidst the industry. And this new survey proves just that.
According to an overview conducted by Photo Rumors on their Facebook group, it appears that Canon has lost against Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, and even Fujifilm. In the list, Photo Rumors had three Canon cameras: EOS R1, R5 Mk II, and C80. However, the crown was given to R5 Mk II, which had 28% votes in the group, with EOS R1 getting a mere 4% and C80 getting just 1%. While Canon R5 Mk II was first, the second in the list was a Sony camera: the a9 III. The a9 III scored 11%, which showcases about a 17% difference in votes. Even the a1 II found itself on the list, coming in third at 9%, alongside Lumix DC-S9 and Leica D-Lux 8. Here is a look at the list:

As someone who has actually reviewed the R5 Mk II, we were also not too happy with the results. The R5, its predecessor, may not have been much loved but it was a sturdy device that featured a good dynamic range, fantastic autofocus, great colors and image quality, as well as a good build. Although there were complaints of overheating, when we tested it for photography, the camera was just fine.
However, compared to what the R5 did back in 2020, the R5 Mk II seemed like a step back in progress. There were more bad than good, which included the removal of multiple exposures in the camera, ergonomic changes, battery life, no effort to improve the autofocus on people of color in low light, and lack of Content Authenticity Initiative integration. In fact, as a user said in the comment section of the Photo Rumor Facebook post, “how little Canon was able to come up with in 4 years and of how far behind it is compared to the a9 III on most accounts.”
Canon’s lack of investment in photography is pretty evident, and it has disappointed many Canon loyalists over the years, with some looking at other options like Nikon, Sony, or Fujifilm. However, while we are on the topic of disappointments, the Sony a9 III was not as much of a letdown as the a1 II for many people. The a9 III tried to innovate with its global shutter, a first in photography cameras. However, while the a1 II fixed the autofocus issue by focusing on people of color, it still was not enough for many. Perhaps one could say that the a1 was so powerful that Sony simply did not see the point in changing its 50MP sensor.
It may seem that the only company on track is Nikon, which has done everything right with its full-frame mirrorless cameras. The Z6 III is perfect for anyone who needs a smaller Z8, and it also features a semi-stacked sensor, a world’s first for fast readout speeds. Similarly, the Z50 II is a powerful camera that is largely focused on content creators rather than photographers.
If anything, this list only indicates how much the camera industry needs to change, and for the better. People are frustrated with how companies are treating photographers as second thoughts when it comes to newer devices. If everyone is focused on content creators, then where will the photographers go?
