Nikon has been steadily winning the race. Over the years, they dropped their chase to be Sony, especially after the launch of Z7 and Z6. While it had a few setbacks with its cameras, including Z fc, it perhaps began to realize that it needed to revamp itself. And so came Nikon Z9 and Z8, which began to change people’s perception of the company, and for the better. Today, one can say that despite being behind Sony and Canon, Nikon is truly a brand of its own. While we do appreciate what they are doing, it also appears that this year, the company may not be launching several photographic equipment. Why? Here’s the story.
According to Nikon Rumors, the company is expected to launch only one camera this year, the replacement of the Nikon Coolpix P1000. However, other than that, there are no reports or rumors of what is expected. Instead, the report states that Nikon expects 2025 to be a “slow year” in comparison to what it produced over the past few years.
In fact, the company announced three cameras in 2024: they launched the Z6 III, Nikon Z50 II, Nikon 50mm f1.4 Z, and Nikon 35mm f1.4 Z, amongst others. While we did not review the APS-C camera, the Z6 III did get our hopes up. In addition, the lenses performed well and proved Nikon is still on the right track. However, as the report states, the company is keen on slowing down because it already has a great lineup of cameras and lenses, with the aim of clearing up existing inventory. This means you may see rebates and discounts that can help to clear the existing products before the next generation of devices is announced. Furthermore, Nikon Rumors is not sure when we will get to see new gear, which entirely depends on how fast Nikon is able to clear out its inventory.

At the moment, the company has three cameras, which they are likely to release soon. Foremost is the Z9’s successor since the original was launched in 2022. Considering how much of a performance beast the device has been (and inclusive), Nikon seriously has to bring massive changes to it. Unlike Canon or Sony, the company can make a few selective changes and leave the rest for firmware updates. Furthermore, since the Z9 is just three years old, it will take some time before we see its successor in the future.
In addition to this, we also need a Z5 replacement, which has been around for a long time. The camera was introduced in 2020, and this year will mark five years of no successor update. The Z7 III is another camera that we have not yet seen, especially considering how the Z6 and the Z7 were launched jointly. While we saw the Z6 III last year, the Z7 III should ideally be announced this year.
There is also a demand for compact cameras, but the P1000 successor does not fit that bill. As rumors of Canon working on its PowerShot line-up soon, the same will expected from Nikon. At this moment, the company can’t make the mistakes it did in the past with certain devices. They have worked really hard to step out of the shadows of Sony and Canon. And this must be continued even this year. As for a slower number of releases, that is again not an issue, as the company has a wide range of cameras in their mirrorless line up. What they need is to innovate and be different; only then can one truly be proud of owning a Nikon camera.
