We’ve got to admit it: modern Fujifilm cameras just don’t have the same effect that they used to have. Ever since they’ve started to become something I like to call Sony Part 4, their soul has majorly suffered. To reference one of the good things about Jim Carrey, I relate it to depression. Fujifilm isn’t depressed, but they’re in a state of deep rest right now. Essentially, their cameras lack soul. But there are still many that you can get on the second hand market at more affordable prices that are also great. Here are three Fujifilm cameras with soul that bring us back to their golden days — and that we’re calling Retro Fujifilm Cameras.

The Fujifilm X70

We’ve called for a successor to the Fujifilm X70 before, and I don’t think that we’re ever going to get one. And thankfully, we’re not alone in thinking this. The Fujifilm X70 was one of the brand’s best point-and-shoot cameras with a small lens flexing an f2.8 aperture, retro dials for control, diminutive size, and capable image quality. We reviewed it back in 2016, and were in love with the handling, lens sharpness, and the color rendition. This variant of the X Trans sensor truly had something magical about it that really made it feel like it was outdoing full-frame cameras.
In fact, we gave it an Editor’s Choice award, and amongst the Retro Fujifilm Cameras, it’s one of our favorites.

The Fujifilm XF10

When we reviewed the Fujifilm XF10 in 2019, we were really intrigued by how the performance of this little camera compared to the interchangeable lens options that Fujifilm offered. Not only is it stylish, but it’s also very compact. What helped to really set this one apart is how it used such a large screen and made the photographer use the touchscreen to take photos. Looking back at the images we shot with it, we’re automatically returned to a nostalgic time thanks to the film simulations and how beautiful the image quality is.
Of any of the Retro Fujifilm Cameras, this is our absolute favorite. I mean, just look at how gorgeous it is!

The Fujifilm X30

The Fujifilm X30 was a unique camera in so many different ways. It had a sensor size that no one else used, had a zoom lens, retro ergonomics, and felt really good. Plus, it delivered images that we really liked because of the way that the lower megapixel sensors rendered back then. On top of all that, a photographer could use this camera with a flash in the hot shoe.
Make no mistake, we wouldn’t call this better than newer cameras, but it was so much different than what we’ve got today. It also wasn’t really film-like, even though Fujifilm comes the closest to anything else made.
