Yes, you’re reading that correctly. Today, Meyer Optik announced a pretty incredible piece of news. Due to massive requests from customers, they’ve released all of their previous lenses except the Biotar 75 II in Leica R-Mount. It makes them one of the only companies we can think of that has shown support for the Leica SLR mount in a very long time. Over the years, we’ve reviewed several of their lenses. Two of our recent favorites are the 58mm f1.5 and the Trioplan 35mm f2.8. More information from the official press release is below.

What This Means for the Future of Analog Photography

The film photography world has both suffered and thrived a lot in the past few years. Millennials were the ones to really give it more life in the past decade due to cultural shifts. But now, Gen Z has been reaching for retro-digital cameras instead. One of the ones that they positive love is the Canon 5D original.
Will this mean that brands might start to give a but of support to old school DSLRs again? I think that this will be quite a fascinating shift if that’s the case. And I’m very excited to see it happen. The last Leica R mount cmaera that we reviewed was the Leica R6 back in 2021. So it’s nice to see that old camera are getting the support and love that many brands refuse to give. However, it’s worth noting that Leica is often better than most Japanese brands when it comes to supporting legacy products.
Meyer Optik Görlitz lenses available for Leica R cameras!
Biebertal – December 12, 2024 – Meyer Optik Görlitz releases all previous lenses (except Biotar 75 II) with native R-mount. The new versions can now be ordered.
“In the past, we have repeatedly received inquiries from people interested in Meyer Optik who requested R-versions of our lenses. This camera system, which is appreciated by many but has been discontinued since 2009, is still very popular and ensures a lively second-hand market,” says Marco Pfeiffer, Managing Director of Meyer Optik Görlitz. “The range of lenses available for these cameras is very limited, and unfortunately, it is often not possible to adapt other popular lenses (e.g., M42 or C-EF) to R cameras due to the respective flange focal distances. Due to this fact, we have decided to offer our lenses with a native R-mount and hope to be able to give everyone who shoots with the R-system a pre-Christmas present.”
Wide range of mounts
Every lens from Meyer Optik Görlitz is available for at least 11, most even for 12, mounts. Only a few manufacturers take the extra effort involved in producing native versions for so many camera systems. Meyer Optik Görlitz takes this unconventional approach in order to make the use of the lenses as convenient as possible.
Meyer Optik Görlitz lenses can be purchased at (website) and are available from well-stocked specialist photo retailers. Incoming orders will be processed one after the other. There could be delivery delays during the upcoming Christmas holidays.
What’s next?
Completely new lenses are currently being planned/developed and will be released during next year. It remains exciting at Meyer Optik Görlitz.
