Nikon has been changing its marketing strategy with the launch of its mirrorless cameras. In recent weeks, we have learned that Nikon will concentrate on mid- and high-end camera developments for future generations. This isn’t surprising, as many other camera makers have followed this approach. With smartphones swallowing the entry camera market share with smaller, albeit powerful sensors and better AI capabilities, camera brands are placing all their eggs in the professional units basket. To ensure their higher-end cameras continue to perform, Nikon released some firmware over the years. But now it seems Nikon firmware updates are currently on hold and will likely be further delayed. Here’s what we found.
Some Concerning News About Nikon Firmware Updates
In a new report by Nikon Rumors, Nikon firmware updates for Zf, Z7 II, Z8, and Z9 are delayed for a few reasons. The author doesn’t state much about the source of the quote; however, it can be assumed that it comes from someone they trust. As per the source, the updates were supposed to be launched “months ago,” but “some major issues” with the company’s Imaging Cloud and Z7 II are postponing its release. “Apparently, backporting the functionality to the Z7 II was way more complicated than anyone expected, which is what’s been holding everything up,” the report notes.

The source further explains how the new Zf, Z8, and Z9 firmware updates will “seriously boost image processing.” The individual, however, doesn’t describe what they mean. As for the Z7 II, the Nikon firmware update ran into “some technical issues specific to that model.” After internal tests, the company learned of a “compatibility problem,” which will take longer to fix. “It’s a bummer for Z7II users, but Nikon wants to make sure the firmware is rock solid before releasing it,” the source added.
While there is no conclusive evidence about the rumor, Nikon has a history of releasing major updates after a long silence. So they can work on something bigger and better. It could also be possible that Nikon firmware updates require a more efficient workflow, so rushing them would only lead to more issues. For instance, a previous faulty firmware update by Sony for the FX3 resulted in a major issue for the photographer. According to the user, the company’s customer service asked him to pay $700 to fix his device, which was ruined due to the company’s update. Nikon doesn’t want that, so if they are taking time, then it is a good thing.
Delays are Normal; What Matters is the Performance
Sure, postponing firmware due to issues with older models may seem unfair, but whatever the case, it is better for Nkionians to wait than rush to get a bugged update. For instance, when we received the Z9 firmware update, we were quoted as happy with the low-light performance. It proved that Nikon heard customer feedback and provided snappy autofocus, recognizing people of color better in dimly lit areas. This is huge, considering that Sony and Canon aren’t really making headway here. The Z6 II’s firmware update last year and the Z7 II’s in 2022 also introduced some small but much-needed changes, making the devices better than what we got the first time during the review.

In another article, Editor-in-Chief Chris Gampat mentioned how some software changes from Leica must be adopted by other camera brands. For instance, a new flash menu, a favorites menu with streamlined navigation, and a “delete unrated” option are some changes that Nikon firmware updates must also include. Each option makes navigation a bit easier for photographers with specific needs. Moreover, with the kind of innovation they have under their Z-mount, Nikon is truly becoming a brand we are coming to admire.
We are yet to see what they create in the future, but seeing the trajectory, it is safe to say they are on the right. Even if Nikon firmware updates are released next year, we have no problem. After all, ingenuity can’t be rushed.
