When it comes to choosing a lens, there are multiple options that Canon users can choose from. For instance the 10-20mm f4, 85mm f1.4L, or 800mm f5.6L, are some examples that continue to be important for various genres of the medium. Per new reports, Canon is now working on one of its most ambitious lenses with ease. Have a look.
According to Canon Rumors, Canon is working on a lens that may merge two of its most distinctive standard zooms into a single, lighter, faster option: RF 24-70mm f2L IS with VCM. According to the report, it means merging RF 24-70mm f2.8L IS USM and the 28-70mm f2L USM, into one lens. It also means that there will be “significant weight savings” over the existing f2 option.
The 28-70mm f2L USM offers 1,430g in weight and lacks image stabilization. The RF 24-70mm f2.8L IS USM weighs 900g, but is said to be behind other rivaling brands in terms of speed and weight. The new f2 may undercut both lenses in many ways. Sony’s FE 28-70mm f2 GM manages the same maximum aperture while weighing just 918g, which matches Canon’s existing f2.8 zoom lens. Nikon also has a Z 28-75mm f2.8 S, which comes in at 675g, and even Canon’s own RF 24-105mm f2.8L IS USM Z weighs less than the RF 28-70mm f2L USM. Canon’s willingness to correct its lens means meeting an aggressive weight target without sacrificing optical performance.
Though knowing Canon, they’ll probably do this and not giving with weather sealing — and instead not make this an L-series lens at all.
Although the Canon RF 28-70mm f2 L USM is a massive lens, it’s also understandably so. The photographer who will spring for this lens really needs the extra stop of light and genuinely wants super high-quality images. That’s what you’re going to get with the Canon RF 28-70mm f2 L USM. Couple this with better autofocusing abilities that have come out recently and the exemplary build quality, and you’ve got an excellent lens–on paper. The truth is, though, not everyone wants a big, chunky lens like this.

The timing is impressive given that many zoom lenses are trying to reach f2 race. Sony already has f2 holy trinity, a 16-28mm f2 GM, a 28-70mm f2, and 50-150mm f2 GM lenses. Canon’s own 24-70mm f2L with IS and VCM autofocus could be a lens that replaces its two older offerings. Canon Rumors says that 24-105mm is another focal range that is coming before the end of 2026. However, the details are not yet clear.
The reaction has been enthusiastic since the announcement. Many users rely on the EF 24-70mm f2.8 II, which is one of the best lenses from the company. Others want a lighter f2.8, along with a new f2 lens, rather than discontinuing it entirely. One of the reasons is that it may offer different price ranges, which are ideal for different groups. Whatever Canon’s decision is, one thing seems certain: the standard zoom slot in the RF lineup is about to get a lot more interesting.
