It’s back with a bang; Laowa has brought back their 12mm f2.8 Lite Zero-D FF ultrawide lens, this time for mirrorless cameras. Billed back then as “the widest angle of view (122°) ever offered from a f/2.8 lens,” the new release sees this lens in a lighter, more visually appealing avatar. Laowa continues to step up the game for 3rd party brand lens manufacturers with their latest release.

The “Lite” in the name isn’t just a marketing gimmick; the new Laowa 12mm f2.8 Lite Zero-D lens is actually just 377g/13.2oz in weight, making it almost half the weight of its first-generation model, which was the widest non fish-eye full-frame lens available at the time of its release. You still get that insanely wide 122-degree field of view, but this time the lens has been reworked to offer exceptional autofocus performance (yes, you read that right) on some mirrorless camera brands. Sony FE, E, and Nikon Z camera owners will be delighted to know that their cameras can autofocus this lens. Canon RF and L-mount camera owners will have to stick to manual focus for now. The new model is also smaller in size.
One more massive upgrade that this model has is that you now have the ability to attach 72mm size circular filters right to the front of the lens. No more fiddling around with custom-made adapters or rear drop-in small filters.

Who Is The Laowa 12mm f2.8 Lite Zero-D Lens Meant For?

This lens is clearly aimed at photographers who want ultra-wide drama in their photos, but in a small and lightweight package. Gone are the days when ultra-wide lenses could weigh you down considerably or have you worried about damaging the often present bulbous front element. The Laowa 12mm f2.8 Lite Zero-D FF lens is set to make the lives of landscape photographers, interior shooters, and cityscape fans a lot easier and stress-free. If you’re an astrophotographer, you’re going to enjoy the improved corner-to-corner sharpness over its predecessor. And while macro shots aren’t exactly what you’d always do with such a wide lens, the close focusing distance allows you to get a little wacky in your compositions if you feel like it.
The original Laowa 12mm f2.8 was already a popular lens among DSLR users, but this new version, styled very similarly to its 10mm f2.8 brother, aims to do everything quicker and better. By leaning into mirrorless-friendly sizing, and adding autofocus, and improving image results, Laowa has made something refreshingly useful in a world drowning in lookalike primes.
