The Panasonic S5 II is still one of the best cameras for hybrid photographers around. And if you’re looking for something that’s close to giving you Fujifilm’s film simulations but with a full-frame sensor, this is one of the best cameras to get your hands on. Recently, it got a firmware update. And as we always do, we’ve updated our review. More details are below.

Ease of Use Updated November 2024
Panasonic’s commitment to the S5 II is incredible as they’ve continued to update this camera several times over the years. Here’s you should know about the latest firmware:
New Photo Style [LEICA Monochrome]
- [LEICA Monochrome] is added to [Photo Style].
Compatibility with LUMIX smartphone app “LUMIX Lab” - “LUMIX Lab” is now compatible with this model.
Support for the Panasonic XLR microphone adaptor DMW-XLR2 - DMW-XLR2 has now been supported.
- 32-bit float audio recording is not available with this model.
5GHz option added to [Wi-Fi Frequency Bands] - [5GHz] option added to [Wi-Fi Frequency Bands] and can be chosen between [2.4GHz].
- Depending on the region, local regulations, etc. may prohibit you from using the 5GHz frequency band outdoors. If this is the case, when outdoors, connect to the smartphone using [2.4GHz] for the Wi-Fi connection.
Other improvements - [REAL TIME LUT] function can be assigned to Fn button.
- Added a pop-up message when using a Panasonic collapsible lens.
- Improved operational stability.
Users on Reddit have also stated that the camera’s firmware update has increased the autofocus speed and start up time. In my opinion, these things haven’t changed all that much. For the most part, the camera has always autofocused pretty fast and keeps subjects in focus with relative ease.
For photographers, the biggest updates are regarding LUMIX Lab and Leica Monochrome. The new Leica Monochrome is nice, but it doesn’t feel as iconic as something like Tri-X. It feels a lot more generic.
