One thing that I am absolutely thrilled to see is how quickly things change month by month in the camera market. One time, you see a player like Canon on top, then you see Sony taking the lead, or it goes to Nikon. With each company pushing to increase its market share, the constant battle becomes quite challenging and, sometimes, a head-scratcher. Yodobashi Camera’s September 2024 ranking winner falls in the latter category. We will explain this in a minute.
Yodobashi Camera’s top ten best-selling cameras list for September 2024 was first seen on Digicame-info. Yodobashi is Japan’s biggest retailer, and they collected the camera sales data between September 1 and September 15. As per the analysis, here are the top ten cameras that made it to the list:

- Canon EOS R6 Mk II body
- Canon EOS R5 Mk II body
- Sony VLOGCAM ZV-E10 II double zoom lens kit
- Sony a7C II body
- Sony a7C II zoom lens kit
- Canon EOS R50 double zoom kit
- Sony a7 IV body
- Sony FX3 body
- Canon EOS R10 RF-S18-150 IS STM lens kit
- Fujifilm X-T50 XC 15-45mm lens kit
The most surprising was the Canon EOS R6 Mk II, which first appeared in December 2022. Since then, the camera has come in second on several occasions, but September marks the first time that it took the crown of the best-selling camera. In our review of the device, we noted: “But the good far outweighs these nitpicky complaints. The EOS R6 Mk II has superb autofocus and tracking capabilities, high ISO performance, and dynamic range. The EVF is pleasing to look through, and Canon’s LCD touchscreen is responsive, boasting some of the most user-friendly menus.”

Since the device is already quite competent and offers great image quality, many photographers would likely choose it as the older generation camera will cost less than a newly launched model. Furthermore, last time, the Canon EOS R5 Mk II’s body was ranked first, but it came second due to delivery delays. In our previous report, we mentioned it may take six months before the camera actually reaches people. So, the chances of many using an older but capable device likely grow more.
Like always, Canon and Sony take the largest share of camera sales, with Fujifilm being the only exception. Last month, Nikon Z8 was placed second, but the company dropped out of the race this time. Seeing how these trends work, Nikon recently announced that their focus is entirely on mid- and high-end cameras, which means that to stay in the top 10, Nikon has to compete with Sony and Canon on all fronts. The Z8 is a capable camera, but Nikon needs more to stay in the groove it has now created for itself.
According to the report, Canon could not perform at Yodobashi, but things changed with the EOS R5 Mk II’s launch. In a way, it seems that Canon is having its comeback era with the new device, with Nikon losing the race; at least for now. There are various rumors about Nikon working on a new camera, but the details are scarce. However, it is safe to say that as long as innovation keeps taking place, the tug-of-war of the “best” will continue to see new successors. Only time will tell who steals the title next month.
