2020 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Sony and their E Mount lenses.

Sony sure took a while to add a lot of lenses at the start of its E mounts life, but, man, once the wheels started turning, E Mount lenses were popping out left, right, and center. And it seems as though those wheels show no sign of slowing down. If recent reports are to be believed, Sony could announce no fewer than six E mount lenses this year, with some being completely new, and others getting updates. We know what we’d like to see. Let’s talk about this after the break.

According to a recent report, posted on Sony Alpha Rumors, Sony could launch six new lenses during 2020. But the reports say all the lenses will be tele-primes and tele-zoom options. No specific focal lengths are discussed in the story, but it does claim that one of the lenses will be for Sony’s APS-C line of cameras and that some of them may be updates to existing lenses, like the 70-200mm f2.8 G.

Sony 70-200 f2.8 G Master could use an update

It would make sense for some of the new lenses to be updated models of existing lenses. Sure, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the current 70-200mm f2.8 G Master or the 70-200mm f4 OSS. Optically, they are outstanding, but technology has changed when it comes to the cameras that use them. The 70-200mm f4 was launched in 2015 and the 70-200mm f2.8 in 2016, and since then we have seen marvels like the a9, the a7r IV, and now the A9 II hit the market. Their autofocus systems are light years ahead of where they used to be back then. If Sony can update both of these lenses so that they may take advantage of new AF tech in the cameras, that would be superb. Hopefully, it will also help drive down the prices of the existing models too.

The Canon 85mm f1.2. We want to see this from Sony in the flavor of E Mount.

When it comes to new lenses, there are a few we would really like to see. We’re sure Sony is taking note of what Canon’s doing with their beautiful RF Mount lenses, and we’re confident they have seen many photographers swoon over the lush RF 50mm f1.2 and the RF 85mm f1.2. Sony, we would love to see glass this fast from you in 2020. Can you imagine a Sony 85mm f1.2 G Master that can take advantage of that fantastic eye detect autofocus? Drool!

The Sigma 120-300 f2.8. Sony needs to create a lens like this.

Seeing as this is an Olympic year, and with the fact that the A9 II is now with us, one lens we want to see is Sony’s take on the sports-oriented 120-300mm f2.8. Sigma has one, and Nikon just announced their take on it too. This is a massive year for Sony with the Olympics being in their own backyard. With Sony looking to take on Canon and their 1DX III, and Nikon with their D6, Sony could really use a 120-300mm f2.8 lens to make the a9 II shine brighter than any other camera that’s trackside. What new tele-primes and tele-zooms would you like to see from Sony in 2020? Lets us know in the comment section below.
