Today, Adobe is announcing a brand new update for Adobe Lightroom Mobile called Authentic HDR. As many of you know, high dynamic range photography (HDR) is popular with landscape photographers. So what this mode is doing is, well, bracketing. According to a press packet, Adobe Lightroom Mobile’s Authentic HDR automatically analyzes a scene and figures out the best exposures to get over three shots. Then the app will align, de-ghost and tone map in the process of creating a 32-bit DNG file.
To create an Authentic HDR image, Adobe Lightroom’s camera is required. There you’ll find a new HDR function (which is totally free.) According to the blog post published on Adobe’s website today:
“For iOS users, the HDR mode requires a device that can capture in DNG, such as an iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, iPhone SE, or iPad Pro 9.7â²â².
For Android users, at this point only the Samsung S7, S7 Edge, Google Pixel, and Pixel XL are supported. So that weâd adhere to our stringent quality and reliability requirements, our primary goal was to ensure the stability of the app while enabling the algorithms to provide the highest possible quality. Thanks to the processing and memory available on the Samsung S7 and Google Pixel devices, we were able to achieve the quality and capabilities required by these incredibly powerful algorithms. The team is working hard to support additional devices as quickly as possible.”
This new update which includes the Authentic HDR feature is coming to both Adobe Lightroom for Android and iOS. It allows photographers to have RAW HDR capture mode. Android users have radial and linear gradient adjustments while iOS users have cool things like improved rating and reviews, improved sync speed, background sync, force touch and a navigation center.
Of course, this also means that you’re also probably best off using a small tabletop tripod of some sort in addition to maybe something like a polarizing filter or an ND. What’s also really awesome is that you can do this with lenses like the Zeiss ExoLenses to get even more versatility. Then there are also the options available from Moment.
