Most of us hate selfie sticks. They’re obnoxious, narcissistic, and they can result in an already overcrowded/dense city being slowed down by tourists. So one baseball cap wearing, large snippers toting hero has made it his mission to go around NYC snipping the phones off of the selfie sticks that tourists have.
While what he’s doing is actually destruction of property and could get him in a load of trouble, the native New Yorker in me and more importantly the photographer in me can’t find a terrible fault with what he’s doing. The sticks tend to take up a large portion of the sidewalk and the city is already so incredibly densely populated. Ever walk through Times Square and seen this happen? Check out this vigilante in action after the jump.
While the selfie stick has surely become popular, it takes what photography is and makes it more and more about the self. It goes so far as to embrace someone being totally self absorbed that they, well, look at Instagram’s most popular users.
