Part II: Sony NEX 5N vs Canon 5D Mk II Image Comparison

by Chris Gampat on 02/10/2012

Recently, we pit the Sony NEX 5n against the Canon 5D Mk II and asked you guys and gal to figure out which photo came from which camera: and many of you got the answer right. According to DXOMark, the Canon 5D Mk II outdoes the little NEX 5n by just a hair.

Let’s see how they perform in ideal lighting conditions.

Gear Used

Canon 5D Mk II

Canon 85mm f1.8

Sony NEX 5n

Sony 50mm f1.8 (NEX)

Process

Both images were shot from approximately the same area and I tried to capture essentially the same scene. They were exposed with the same settings and focused on the same spot (ISO 100, f2.8 at 1/160th). Absolutely no post production was done to either image. They were straight converts from RAW to JPEG.

Which one is which, can you tell? Let us know in the comments below. No peaking at the EXIF data. We’ll eventually reveal which one is which.

A is Sony. B is Canon. The bokeh is a dead giveaway.

Sony is A. canon is B. easy. first one has MUCH less DOF

    • Bubba

the first one has much MORE depth of field, you meant to say…

      • alex

ur mistaking sDOF (shollow DOF) DOF without “s” is what u get from PointandShoot cameras. so Vemula was right!

A: Sony       B: Canon     It’s not really a fair comparison though because you kept the aperture the same for both cameras. Obviously a full frame sensor at equivalent apertures has more depth of field.  To make this fair, you should have stopped the Canon down to f/4 and doubled it’s shutter speed.

    • Chris Gampat

Man, you’re looking at this all wrong…

    • Bubba

a full frame sensor at equivalent apertures AND composition has LESS depth of field!

please stop spreading the internet with false informations

I’m not, you’re looking into this test too much the way that many of you looked into the other post too much.

The answers are very obviously right in front of you and there are hints everywhere.

Additionally, if I did that the histograms would be all off and you’d probably sit here bitching and complaining all about that.

with “please stop spreading the internet with false informations ” I was referring to Spencer sentence about DOF, non your article.

I don’t understand what your intent is when you compare these cameras.
the image quality is very good in both of them, but there are a lot of other features to consider (low light, dof, noise, focus, exposure, etc.)

In the same way, in the previous article, you cannot compare two images so different in focus. One’s opinion could be flawed by that “little detail” (the focus), and thus result incorrect.

Ya that’s true.  It’s hard to make everybody happy ;)   Ignoring the DOF difference, the similarity in quality between the two cameras is astoundingly close.  Sony is doing some great work with their new cameras.

Whoops, my mistake.  Just a typo and I’ve fixed it right up.  :)

    • Bubba

apart from that, I agree that’s like compare oranges and apples…it’s still fruit, but it’s different :)

I hope sample  B is the Canon, or my 5dmk2 and 85mm 1.8 are in trouble.

    both are awesome

The A photo has more DR, but how do you know the raw converter applied the same tone curve ? The apply different settings based on what camera produced the image
