You Can Now Order Prints of Your Images Directly Through Flickr Prints

flickr prints

Flickr wants to become a one-stop-shop for all of your printing needs.

Flickr is going through something of a rebirth of late. After years of decline, the online photographic community was purchased by SmugMug in April 2018. Since the purchase, the once faltering photography service has found new legs, and today another new feature has been added to the online platform. Flickr announced today that a new photo printing service called Flickr Prints is now available to all members. Join us after the break for the details. Continue reading…

Lizzy Gadd on Adding an Ethereal and Artful Twist to Self-Portraits

Get inspired to break away from throwaway self-portraits with the work of Lizzy Gadd, who combines self-portraits and landscape photography with an ethereal twist.

Social media often gets us inundated with senseless selfies, giving the self-portrait a bad rap. But the work of photographer, artist, and writer Lizzy Gadd opens our eyes to the creative and artful possibilities of this type of photography. In a short film by SmugMug, she talks about how drawing ideas and inspiration from the energy of her emotions led her to develop her own stunning self-portrait style.

Flickr is Finally Getting Rid of that Antiquated Yahoo! Sign In

I find it a bit surreal that it is 2018 and we’re even still talking about Flickr; they’re still around.

One would think that Flickr would have gone the way of MySpace and Xanga years ago when it was cool, but there is still a community that apparently cares about it despite its lack of serious relevance in the major photography world these days. But today, the company announced a number of new changes including the fact that they’re removing that pesky required Yahoo! sign-in. That’s at least one step in the right direction as it’s personally kept me off of the platform for a long time now. This news comes after SmugMug bought Flickr.

Now that Smugmug Bought Flickr, What Changes Are on the Way?

SmugMug promises to bring back the glory days of Flickr and the community it once fostered

Long before the reign of Instagram and Facebook groups, Flickr was the best place for photographers to share and discuss their work, as well as meet some like-minded creatives. Now that photo-sharing and storage company SmugMug has bought Flickr for an undisclosed price, CEO Don MacAskill has expressed his commitment to breathe new life into the photo sharing community and make it a haven for photographers once again.

Ben Von Wong Photographs Super Heroes on the Edge of Skyscrapers

All images by Ben Von Wong. Used with permission.

“As we get older, we stop dreaming. We stop believing that anything is possible because we’ve seen too much of what isn’t. And that is why I wanted to photograph ordinary people as superheroes — so that they could see themselves as they had once dreamed.” states Mr. Ben Von Wong about his latest photo project.

Ben Von Wong is well known for doing some pretty crazy stuff, and this latest artistic stunt by him only solidifies that statement amongst us fraidy-cats when it comes to heights. Ben thought of creating the iconic image of a superhero on top of a skyscraper. You know, the hero shots that you see of Batman, Daredevil, Spiderman, Superman, Nightwing, and the list can go on for forever.

Don’t worry though, the proper safety procedures were all in place sans new underwear. The scenes also had a lot of wind blowing. BTS photos, the video showing the collaboration with Smugmug, and actual photos from the shoot are after the jump.

Customization Code Makes Your Smugmug Gallery Look Like Your Flickr

after

Image by Lamah (AKA Nicholas Sherlock)

A Redditor (Nicholas Sherlock) wrote a special customization code that sexes up the look and layout of Smugmug’s galleries. Instead of making them extremely separated and looking somewhat archaic, it cuts the separation down significantly and tries to stick to Flickr’s design layout more than something like 500px’s.  As you can see on Nick’s website, it i really quite beautiful to look at and looks even better on a mobile device. The fact of the latter is even more important for portfolio presentation.

The code is currently in Beta, and Nick shows you exactly how to do it in this forum post.

SmugMug Raises Pro Acount Prices by $100…No, Really!

So, this morning, I woke up to a shocking email. SmugMug was increasing its pro accounts by $100 USD for my next renewal. The reason is storage cost. Many are complaining as I type this. I am not happy myself. I was actually attempting to take my photography beyond the hobby phase. I had been building my business model around SmugMug and its pricing. Many photographers find this price increase too drastic and shocking. Hundreds of complaints have flooded in and Smugmug has handled it well so far.  For SmugMug they run the risk of alienating a lot of newer photographers due to the fact that there are lower cost options available.
