If you were to sit there and compile a list of cult cameras, the majority of them would be analog–but in the digital world one can consider the predecessors to the Ricoh GR III to be cult classics. Along with the Fujifilm X100 series of cameras, the Ricoh GR has been fascinating street photographers for years. Like its film predecessors, the Ricoh GR III is a compact camera designed to be low profile with a sharp lens, fairly simple controls, and designed to let the photographer really just shoot. The Ricoh GR III was announced around Photokina 2018 last year, and it was met with mixed feelings. Some wanted a full frame sensor while others clamored for weather sealing and better battery life. Mentally, I let these things slide and made justifications for why they weren’t included in the camera, but the really big one for me was removal of the little pop-up flash.
Heads up, film photographers! If you’ve setup your own darkroom and hope that more people will get to experience its magic, here’s a project that definitely deserves your support. With your pledge on Kickstarter, you’ll help bring the complete darkroom experience to the film photography community of Hawaii.
Typically when photojournalists survive dangerous encounters in a war zone, it’s because of some protective gear that they have–but for Gabriele Micalizzi, his Leica cameras saved him. According to a post made on Reddit, the cameras that saved him are the Leica Q and the Leica SL. Both of these cameras have been tested to be incredibly durable by photographers and there are many stories from photographers about how their Leicas survived quite tortuous conditions.
Over the decades, America has become home to Latin Americans who have settled in the country. For those that left their nation behind, they have brought new culture – whilst trying to adjust to expectations put on them in the place they now call home. But there’s a new generation coming through. A generation that only knows America as their home, but one that is heavily influenced by Latin American attitudes from their parents.
Karen Arango is a photographer who has documented that generational crossover through her series Miss Behave. The work takes a look at the lives of young girls, ages five to twelve, and aims to understand what life is like growing up as first-generation American girls.
Kodak Portra films are among the favorites of today’s film photographers for portrait and wedding photography. But if you want to satisfy your curiosity and see how it would perform for landscape shots, we have a fine example for you from Wellington-based photographer Jacob Howard.
It can be argued that a camera system is only as good as the lenses available, and this is especially true when launching a brand new camera system, as is the case with the Nikon Z Mount series. One of three lenses that were announced at the launch of Nikon’s brand new Z Mount, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f4 S was the only zoom lens of the trio, covering a zoom range that is popular among photographers that specialize in landscape, street, and portrait photography. Nikon was kind enough to send us a copy of the lens along with the brand new Z6 and Z7 cameras, and we put it through an exhaustive battery of tests to see how well the lens performed.
Memory, thoughts, and emotions are all popular subjects for all kinds of photography pursuits, and we’ve put the spotlight on a good number of them here. It’s always interesting to see how photographers play with some of the most visceral concepts of our humanity. A perfect example is Phantoms of the Brain, a series by Spanish photographer and visual artist Al Mefer, which uses long exposures to illustrate the “imagery of a tortured soul.”

Sony has done an outstanding job with their APS-C camera line up. The old Sony NEX system really started changing people’s view about crop sensor cameras. The release of the a6000, a6300, and the a6500 and all of the new technology they brought to the supposedly ‘non-pro’ APS-C camera world continued to push boundaries and made them firm favorites with photographers all over the world. The new Sony a6400 with its crazy fast autofocus system is about to hit the shelves, and we thought it would be a good idea to take a look at some prime lenses that will really get the most out of this, and all of the other Sony APS-C cameras on the market.
Reddit is a treasure trove for all things weird, wonderful, obscure, stuff you might forgotten about or even haven’t been aware of. A perfect example is this thread that reminds that Ringo Starr once photographed a group of high schoolers while the Beatles were touring the US in 1964. Their friends didn’t believe them then, but around 50 years later, the Beatles drummer himself would prove that it did happen!
