Cameras have reached a stage where they can deliver excellent image quality, but they are not that exciting to use. One reason is the same-old design, which can seem a bit off. While many companies are still sticking to standard models, OM System has decided to venture into building retro-style cameras with an exciting new model: the OM-3. Here’s why it is still considered a fun entry right now.
Launched last year, the OM3 is a new, higher-end camera that features an exciting new body. This is also the only camera that is quite close to being the Pen F successor, and the only retro camera that costs around $2000. There is also serious durability and multiple film simulations that can be helpful to many. The device is small, and also has the option for MF distance preset for zone focusing — just like so many other OM System cameras. But with the OM3, it just feels so special.
The device is said to have a metal body, and in our tests, that didn’t necessarily mean that it was very heavy. The camera is lightweight and has wonderful dials. This adds to the camera’s overall appeal, which is why many people are going after it. “Every time I put it in the hands of friends, they were in love with the camera. In many ways, it brings back the joy of the Olympus EM5,” we said in our review.
In addition to a simple menu, the OM3 also offers an exceptional focusing system. In bright light, it was great, and in low light, it didn’t have much problem finding people when autofocusing. It can also find people of color with ease in the dark but it can be inconsistent. As for street photography, Preset MF is an ideal feature to use.
One of the reasons why people choose the camera is that it offers great JPEG quality. While you have RAW files, we preferred to stick to JPEGs. “And it’s best off to just shoot in JPEG with the film simulations along with the auto white balance set to keep the warm colors in the scene,” we further added to the review. In many ways, the OM System OM3 is one of the most liberating cameras you’ll get. “The colors are vivid, bright, punchy, saturated, and juicy,” we explained in our article. Black-and-white photography users will also get what they hoped for. There is also computational photography, which further makes the camera exceptional.
