A full frame camera can achieve the highest image quality, but it also tends to struggle when it comes to low-light performance if the megapixel count is too high. This is even more important if you want to print your work. However, over the decades, cameras have evolved significantly, with some companies truly helping creators achieve the perfect balance when shooting at night. Here is a look at a few cameras that demonstrate exemplary performance in the dark.
Leica SL2s

TheLeica SL2s is a great full frame camera, featuring a 24MP sensor, a burst rate of 25fps, IP-rated weather sealing, and an ISO of up to 100,000. The camera produces excellent RAW files, and at high ISOs, we did not notice any color issues, unlike in other Leica cameras that came before it. “In fact, the dynamic range at ISO 6400 was still very solid,” we said. When we printed images from this camera at ISO 6400, the clean results were a surprise. When paired with L-mount lenses, you also get some exceptionally sharp results. It is a camera that professionals will want to take everywhere with them.
Canon EOS R6 II

Another great full frame camera comes with a 24MP sensor. The R6 Mk II also offers an ISO range of up to 204,800, a burst rate of 40fps, and 1,053 automatic autofocus points. The camera is sturdy, offers great colors, and has superb autofocus and tracking capabilities. In addition, images shot at ISO 12,800 are “perfectly suitable for digital reproduction,” but you can produce nice 17 x 22 prints at ISO 6400. It is an all-around camera for photographers who shoot landscapes, weddings, or portraits. So if you are looking for something reliable, this one is for you.
Nikon Zf

]The Nikon Zf is the only retro-style full frame camera on this list with exceptional performance. It houses a 24MP sensor, offers a burst rate of 30fps, and supports recording 4K videos. The device has wonderful ergonomics, the images stand on their own, and it can handle various situations with ease. At ISO 51,200, one can create 17×22-inch prints without any issues. You can also post pictures with 3000 pixels on the longer side, and they will hold well. As we said in our review, “With Sony, the details disappear after a while. But at 51,200 ISO, the Nikon Zf is a shining example for how the industry should be doing.”
Sony a7s III

Sony created a low-light magician back in 2020. The a7s III may only offer 12MP, but it can surely capture some exceptional images in low light. The ISO can be expanded up to ISO 409,600; you get 15 stops of dynamic range and 759 phase-detection AF. The camera offers fantastic dynamic range, and high ISO performance is impressive. As we said in or review: “You can shoot at ISO 6400, 12,800, and 25,600, and have no problems. If you want to go to nuclear numbers, you can do that too.” The camera’s capabilities make it ideal for photojournalists and documentary photographers. In fact, we liked the camera so much, it won five out of five stars.
