RETO Production, which has licensed the title of Eastman Kodak Company, has been creating newer, budget-friendly cameras today. The company recently launched Kodak Charmera, a pretty key chain 110 camera that has been quite popular. And now, the company has just announced a new device through their Instagram post: The Snapic A1. Here is a look at what the new sneak peek is about.
On their Instagram page, @kodakfilm.reto, Snapic A1 is teased as a camera that “ensures you never miss a moment.” The device is small, thin, and compact, and it appears to have the following:

- 25mm 3-element glass lens
- Zone focusing
- Multiple exposure mode
- Hand-grip
- LCD screen
In many ways, the camera resembles the old 1970s compact Kodaks. The device is pocketable and appears to be a new, budget-friendly camera aimed at young users.

The video also showcases that the lens is 25mm, but there is no revelation of the aperture. This means the camera would give a less “extreme wide” field of view, and on Reddit’s Analogue Community, some even compared it to the Pentax 17, which is a half-frame camera. One user said, “Looks to me like it’s half frame from the first shot of the back with film being loaded. The film gate looks smaller, and that’s interesting, will have to see what they do.”
The pricing has not yet been revealed, but some argue that this could rival the Lomo MC-A, which costs a little over $500. However, since Kodak has its PixPro options, and RETO launched its own KODAK EKTAR H35, both of which cost less than $200. In fact, we had the opportunity to test the EKTAR H35, and we fell in love with the beautiful device. As we said, “The half-frame camera takes a little getting used to using. Once the brain adapts to the shooting style, it is a lot of fun to use. It provides sharp images with plenty of detail. Pair it with some Kodak Ektar film for some added fun, and enjoy the muted, vintage colors.”
Currently, the Snapic A1 film camera has piqued people’s interest, especially since RETO launched the EKTAR in 2022. There are also young photographers increasingly opting for portable cameras. From the images shared in another Instagram post, they look interesting and were shot with Kodak Tri-X 400. If reasonably priced, the camera will garner attention. However, serious photographers and purists will look the other way, as this device seems to lack major controls.
Either way, we have to wait and see when the device launches. But for now, it is safe to say that the film era is likely to revive more exciting photographs.
