Kodak Kodachrome was one of the most legendary film emulsions ever made!
Rejoice, photographers: those of us who never got to shoot Kodak Kodachrome seem to be getting a chance after all. Almost 10 years after the company announced the death of the beloved film emulsion, Kodak is letting the world know that Kodachrome is indeed going to be returning to shelves very soon after Ektachrome hits stores (they’re not clear on that timeline either). Specifically, Kodak Kodachrome is coming back in ISO 64, 100 and 200 speed film emulsions. When we asked for word about it returning in large format, Kodak’s reps told us they’ll consider it if the sales of the current emulsions do well.
This all comes as something completely odd and random. I mean, one of the reasons why Kodachrome died is due to environmental concerns. The process of developing the film was quite toxic to the environment. However, as Kodak’s reps stated to us in an email:
“We have the utmost confidence in the Trump Administration’s ability to neglect the environment. And after a few meetings, the EPA is allowing us to continue to both manufacture the film and process it at certain facilities so long as the waste chemicals are dumped directly into the Atlantic Ocean.”
We can expect Kodak Kodachrome perhaps sometime before Photokina 2018. But considering that this is the last big Photokina, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s another big film emulsion coming from Kodak.
I don’t believe I have to say this, but this is an April Fool’s Joke. Everyone knows that the EPA would rather us dump on Native American reservations.
