Viltrox has introduced some amazing lenses for full frame and crop sensor cameras. They have some wonderful pancake options that can help people get desired images with ease. It now appears that the company has an upcoming busy week, thanks to new reports of the expansion of the lineup of Micro Four Thirds lenses. Here’s a look.
New MFT Lenses
In a new report by DigiInfoCamera, the Independent Photographers Association posted on Chinese website Weibo that Viltrox is entering the Micro Four Thirds system. The lens is said to be 35mm f1.7 and 25mm f1.7 AIR models. The 35mm will be 70mm in full frame equivalent, with a 52mm lens weighing about 180 grams.
The report suggests that the 35mm f1.7 is a Micro Four Thirds adaptation of Viltrox’s existing APS-C AF 35mm f1.7, but with a larger image circle. It is said to be an uncommon focal length for the M4/3 format, since they are often 17mm or 25mm offerings from OM System or Panasonic. This perhaps be the reason why Viltrox can stand out.
If the lenses manage to launch and sell well, Viltrox may introduce more M4/3 lineup. Other lenses that the company can convert to the format could be AF 9mm f2.8, AF 15mm f1.7, and AF 56mm f1.7.
At the moment, Japanese lens makers seem to be taking a step back from Micro Four Thirds. Except OM System and Panasonic, a lot of people are not really making MFT sensors or lenses. This leaves the market looking stagnant, and with reports that Insta360 is preparing its own M4/3 camera, this points out that Chinese creators are keen on picking up where the Japanese folks are leaving the format off. This can be a huge thing for loyal users, who are keen on getting a new lens.
A 28mm, too?
In another post by Sony Alpha Rumors, there have been reports of the launch of a new AF 28mm f1.8 II EVO. It is said to release on July 15, with images of the same circling online.

However, in another post, the Independent Photographers Association pushed the article back (via Asobinet), stating that the 28mm’s report is false. However, the suggestion is that Viltrox may eventually upgrade its existing AF 28mm f1.8 into the EVO series.
While the situation remains unresolved, this only proves that it is challenging to figure out what is true or not. The 28mm seems to be a lens that people want and can fill the gap in the EVO series with an affordable version.
Overall, it seems Viltrox is undeterred by Nikon’s lawsuit. They are planning to come back stronger in any way they can, and the M4/3 seems to be one such way. With most brands having a prime focus, either full frame or APS-C, Viltrox hopes to cater to them all. Until we see more conclusive evidence, it is for the best to wait and see.
