When it comes to choosing a camera with fast autofocus, there are a handful of options. While companies are trying their best to introduce models with a fantastic system, some find it challenging to offer something more inclusive. So, today, we look at 4 fantastic options that are getting this right.
Nikon Z9

The Nikon Z9 was introduced in 2022 and continues to hold the flagship title of the device. It features a 45MP sensor, along with the ability to focus down to -8.5 EV. The device is also loaded with vehicle, animal and human autofocus detection, along with 3D tracking. The autofocus is a serious competitor, with the ability to track fast moving subjects and people of color in low light. In fact, during an event, the camera could figure out and focus on people of different backgrounds. As we added, “It was able to autofocus both on people of color and those with lighter skin better than I’ve seen with comparable Canon and Sony cameras. What’s more, it did this in the auto autofocus mode — specifically where the system tries to figure it all out itself.”
Canon R5 II

The Canon R5 II is the successor to the iconic R5. Packed with a 45MP sensor, the camera boasts new features better designed for video and photo needs. The camera offers Eye-Priority AF and 1053 manually selectable points. During the day, the camera barely missed focus, but after the firmware update, the device managed to focus on people of color. As we said in our review, “Even in the rather terrible lighting of the event space, the Canon R5 II not only managed to acquire focus easily, but it was also able to hold focus even with a moving subject at a distance.”
Sony A1 II

The Sony A1 II is designed for photographers who shoot events and document people. The device features a 50MP sensor, 759 AF points, and a 3-inch 2,095,104-dot LCD. The camera also offers Real-time Recognition AF+ and Preset Focus for non-powered zoom lenses. As for the autofocus, it is not only blazing fast, but can also track people of color, even in poor light. The a1 II is also good at tracking animals and vehicles, making it a perfect companion for various genres of photography. This is a flagship that Song users will adore.
Panasonic S1R II

The Panasonic S1R II is a 44MP camera that features meaningful tools such as real-time LUT, hybrid focus with AI, multiple exposure mode and more. The camera is sturdy, and the focusing system is quite accurate. This makes life easy for those who shoot both stills and videos. As we added in our review, “Autofocusing on people of color in low light is pretty accurate and fast to do. However, I still find Leica and Nikon to be better at it. If anything, the Panasonic S1R II is on par with the Sony a1 II — which Sony claims to be 30% better at autofocus on people.”
