When it comes to getting the best images on Instagram or Tumblr, photographers and young enthusiasts have always looked at offerings from Nikon, Canon, or Sony. While these cameras are fantastic, they often allow one to see the world in two dimensions only. As many young photographers feel restricted, there are some brands that are trying to change this. An example is the introduction of a new 3D camera that has been created by a Swiss startup, Roofless Labs.
Called K4MERA, the upcoming camera is being promoted as the world’s first instant digital stereoscopic device. At the moment, the specs have not yet been revealed, but the company notes that the 3D camera relies on four hardware-synchronized lenses to document different perspectives at the same time. There is also a new edge-AI chip that aligns and stitches these photographs to reveal a ready-to-share 3D GIF in under five seconds.

As of 2026, K4MERA is still in development and one can join the waitlist if they wish to buy the camera. The project, so far, is being supported by Swiss federal innovation agency Innosuisse, research and technology organization CSEM, and startup accelerator Venture Kick.
K4MERA basically works with wigglegrams, which was first made in 1980, when Nimslo created its camera with 4 lenses. This was to offer a different, three-dimensional perspective. While the idea was way ahead of its time, it was never sold. Nimslo went bankrupt, and the intellectual property was then purchased by Nishika. Then the N8000 came in the late 1980s, which offered to create four offset images that were to be printed on lenticular paper. Although the idea worked, it was far too expensive and inconvenient.
In the digital age, TikTok, Instagram and other platforms dragged this forgotten technology back. They then began to scan the frames and create animated GIFs, also known as wigglegrams. It was also the time that the demand for N8000 exploded on eBay, with one camera now costing anywhere between $200 to $800. In more recent years, there have been cameras such as RETO3D, which use 35mm film and cost less than $100. However, none offer a digital variant until the introduction of K4MERA.

The camera does open up a new possibility in the world of photography. It is also be seen as the successor to Nishika and RETO3D, as the digital version makes it far easier to stay connected with the virtual world. The product’s road-map also includes future updates such as spatial video, HDR capture from multiple simultaneous exposures, and subject segmentation. Those who know how to tinker with cameras will adore how SDK can help with customization, real-time effects that can be put directly in-camera or in post-production.
Moreover, with Comp4nion app, one can also refine, adjust focus, or help balance lighting together, as well as allow various wigglegrams to be stitched together into a “K4ROUSEL.” One can rely on their built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, with no cables or cloud services required.
A 3D camera like this can work as added interactive material for street, portrait, commercial, events, and documentary photographers. The GIFs can be helpful to those who are keen to give additional material to their clients. In fact, it fills in the gap for a 3D digital camera, which makes everything a bit more exceptional.
