In 2025, The Phoblographer is doing something that might seem odd for a lot of publications. We’re hiring an arts writer. Specifically, we’d like to hire an arts writer based in London. And we’ve got a lot of reasons for this. If you’re looking for a part-time gig with a solid team of folks, then read on, please.
The Phoblographer is a progressive publication, especially for the photography world. And we’re known for not holding back. For several years, we were also one of the only photography publications that majorly covered every facet of the arts world as it related to our medium. With a new strategy, we’re aiming to return to covering the art world in a completely different way than any other photography-based publication.
You’ll find on our media kit that Gen Z and Millennials make up most of our readership. Want a steady gig? Take a look. Want an internship? Take a look!
Arts Writer (Hiring in London)
The Phoblographer approaches news a whole lot differently than other publications. You can read more or less the same story everywhere else. But not here. And we’re looking for an intelligent perspective.
This writer must have an understanding of both the technical and artistic side of photography. Here are more details:
Requirements
- Must have a journalism degree or be actively working on one.
- Must have experience with WordPress. This is absolutely mandatory. Other apps that we use are Trello, Discord, and Gmail for work.
- Strong command of the English language; the American dialect and spelling is what we’re using. But we can work on honing this with you.
- Previous related writing experience. Otherwise, we ask for sample articles written by you. All articles must be written without generative AI and your work will be sent through various checks to ensure of it.
- Will be able to demonstrate knowledge of copyright laws pertaining to using images, etc. This, however, can also be taught to you.
- Must have technical knowledge of photography.
- Must have a hungry interest in the art world of photography
- Occasionally, we’ll send you to galleries and museums where you’ll have to cover an event.
- A requirement of one article each business day at a minimum. Sometimes, we might require more. This is a freelance job; and therefore, know that it’s a gig. Your mental health is very important to us.
- Must be able to meet deadlines
- Must work well with a team and be able to take guidance (sometimes constructive criticism) well
- You’ll have a trial period of three months if you’re not doing this for college credit. Otherwise, you have to prove that you’re doing this for an internship. We’ll pay you, of course. If you’re out of college, we’ll treat this as an ordinary freelance gig.
- Monetary payments are made through PayPal, Zelle, Venmo, Western Union, or check. Everyone is paid on average, no more than 24 hours after submitting an invoice. The Phoblographer is well known for fair and honest compensation amongst the photography blogging world.
- Payment is determined on where you’re based. Typically, the Phoblographer looks at what the national averages are and then we pay better. But we won’t pay an American rate to anyone that isn’t based in America.
- We have a very serious non-compete policy.
- This is an entry-level position, and we’re hiring in London.
