One of our favorite 3rd-party manufacturers has just announced two new lenses. Laowa releases the all-new 17mm f/4 Zero-D Tilt-Shift & Shift lenses in multiple camera mount versions. These two are the latest in a series of shift lenses that the brand has created for mirrorless camera users in recent years.

Laowa’s 17mm f4 Zero-D Tilt-Shift and 17mm f4 Zero-D Shift are available for full-frame and medium-format mirrorless cameras. Targeted at photographers who need precise control over perspective and distortion, these are clearly those who focus on architectural, cityscape, and interior photography. These new lenses fit right between the existing 15mm and 20mm f4 tilt-shift lenses. It’s an appealing middle ground for those who don’t want to go ultra-wide at 15mm or choose the standard wide 20mm.
Why Two Similar Ones?
I’ve personally found tilt lenses gimmicky for the kind of photography I enjoy. I don’t see a huge market for miniature-effect photos, at least not at the professional level, so having both tilt and shift capabilities in a lens isn’t something I assume most people look for. Yes, there are scenarios where you’d want to maximise the plane of focus, such as in some types of close-up product photography, but I’d argue the number of people who’d dabble with shift lenses is more. Maybe the folks at Laowa had a similar feeling, and they decided to release two editions of this focal length – one with both features and one with just the shift for architecture enthusiasts.
Key Features

Both versions allow for shift movements. These are especially helpful when photographing tall buildings or architectural structures from ground level. By shifting the lens upward while keeping the camera level to the horizon, photographers can avoid converging vertical lines that often occur when angling the camera upward.
The tilt-shift version offers a little bit more shift at ±12mm; the shift-only version provides ±11mm (*±8mm on medium format for both tilt-shift and shift versions). This much shift gives quite a lot of flexibility for correcting perspective or creating stitched panoramic images. Plus, at 17mm, you can even stand quite close to the structures you’re photographing, with both lenses giving you a wide 104° angle of view.
Zero-Distortion

I’ve used at least two Laowa Zero-D lenses before, and they truly mean zero when it comes to distortion. You really have to use one of them for yourself to see how exceptionally well they keep verticals in your frame vertical. Thanks to Laowa’s design methods, lenses bearing that nomenclature are made with no visible distortion and minimal to no keystone effect. You can be certain this will make your photos look neater and won’t have you spending time in software trying to straighten your buildings better. The lenses also have a minimum focusing distance of 25cm, so if you want to add something close in your foreground for a creative perspective, you can safely do so.

360° rotation
Both lenses offer additional features that enable creative shooting beyond simple corrections. They have a 360-degree rotation mechanism, which is especially helpful for panoramic stitching and for adjusting perspective at various angles. The rotation features precise clicks every 15 degrees.
Arca-Swiss Tripod Foot
At 770g and 810g, these 17mm lenses aren’t too heavy, but Laowa has included an Arca-Swiss lens foot, which can be directly mounted to a compatible tripod. This is a great thought as it’ll save you the hassle of screwing and unscrewing those tripod plates, which are often forgotten on the last lens you used on the tripod. We haven’t received clarity on whether this is a removable foot.
Despite such impressive features, both lenses are priced relatively affordably. You can pick up the Laowa 17mm f4 Zero-D Shift lens for just USD 999, while the tilt-shift version costs a bit more at USD 1249. They will be made available in Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF, GFX, and XCD mounts. They are also available for L-mount cameras, with the exception of the Panasonic Lumix models: S5 II, S1 II, S1r II, S1 IIE, and S5 IIX.
