For a really long time, I haven’t shot with the Canon gear I’ve got in my office. Something about the gear just feels wrong to me these days though I admit that they can be incredible image-making devices. However, I think that many of the products they put out are just money pits. Why couldn’t the R3 get pre-capture? Why couldn’t the R5 get the focusing upgrades that other cameras got? But what’s made me really never want to pick up their cameras again is the password issue.
Right before I went away on a holiday break, I tried to use the Canon EOS R5 again. That camera is by far my favorite and I’ve had everything customized and set up just the way I wanted it to be. But the password issue came up. I typed in the password that I’m positive was correct. However, it never worked. And in the end, it ended up resetting the entire camera. All my settings were gone.
Why? What’s the point of undoing all my settings and the custom profiles I had saved?
It drives me really angry because that means that I’d need to set the camera back up to be similar to my EOS R and my EOS R3. That would take a lot of time because not even all the controls are in the same place or nearly the same at all. In the end, I decided that none of this was bringing my any joy and so I packed the camera and the lens back up and put the camera bag back into my closet.
Let’s be frank here: there are way too many good cameras on the market these days for me to be dealing with this nonsense and not even a way to unlock the camera otherwise using my phone or something else. The main cameras that I’m using these days are from Panasonic, Leica, and Nikon. In fact, I’ve gone back to using a DSLR most recently.
Many years ago, I liked the idea of adding password protection to cameras. But Canon didn’t seem to fully think it through and more importantly, it’s done in a very annoying way. What I really don’t understand is why they password protect the cameras but they don’t add an easy way to do content credentials.
We’re currently in a spot similar to what we were in nearly a decade ago when Canon did the bare minimum to retain its market position. But the truth is that no one is making a bad camera and Canon is simply just making the same camera that Sony is making.
