Nikon has launched interesting cameras over the years, but only a handful have stood the test of time. While the company introduced some exceptional full-frame models, they also took the time to launch APS-C devices that have been on par with their bigger siblings. An example is the Nikon D500, which changed the way pros view smaller-sensor cameras. Here’s why the model still shines today.
Incredible Focus

One of the reasons people still choose the D500 is its quick focusing ability. The camera builds on Nikon’s innovation and delivers exceptional autofocus. It is not just accurate but also consistent, and can focus in really low light as well. In our review, we never really missed any shots. As we explained, “While Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm and Sony all offer very good autofocusing systems with their high-end APS-C cameras, I have to say that Nikon’s is the most consistent.” This is important, especially for those who want to buy an APS-C camera for wildlife or street photography.
Exceptional RAWs

Nikon D500 offers a 20MP sensor, which may not seem like a lot. However, in our review, we found the camera to deliver stunning images. This is not just applicable to JPEGs but also to RAW files. The colors from the file are vivid, and the RAW allows you to recover details. The image above is an example of that, with the photo on the left being quite overexposed. When you see the image on the right, you know you can recover details in the highlights. Similarly, the high ISO results are on par with X Pro 2.
Sturdy Built And Resale Value

The Nikon D500 is a camera that can withstand any weather. It offers a nice grip, multiple buttons for workflow, and a well-placed thumb joystick. The camera is definitely heavier than the Fujifilm offerings, but that is not a bad thing given its build. In addition, the camera today has a great resale value. As we said in our other article, the camera can cost anywhere between $750-$1,200, which is a lot for an APS-C camera that was intriduced a decade ago.
Despite the years that have passed, the D500 remains an ideal choice for serious photographers today. If you are an enthusiast who wants to get a handle on manual control and want distinct photos, this is the model to go after. You also get Pletjora lenses for the AF mount, which will cost less than the mirrorless offerings. You can still get a new model on Amazon at $1700 or check eBay for lower prices.
