The year 2025 changed our perceptions of cameras. While a new camera is what most people want, there have also been instances when one prefers to work with vintage gear. An example of this is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1, a camera launched over 15 years ago that continues to command high prices on the used market. Here’s a look at how or why people are still going after it.
What Makes the Panasonic Great?

On US eBay, the camera’s body is fetching around $150–$300, while complete kits with lenses can climb into the $400+ range depending on condition and accessories. So, why does this camera from 2009 still matter?
The Panasonic G1 was one of the earlier Four Thirds models from the company that features a 12.1MP sensor, 23 AF points, and a 3-inch LCD. The small body offers DSLR-style control, and it is quite easy to use. In fact, we had the opportunity to test the gear, and we adored the device. As we said in our review:
If you’re a photographer that is using something like a Leica M camera of some sort, this is perhaps one of the best back-ups or companion cameras. The reason for this is because of the fact that it is very small and autofocuses very quickly.
In addition, we found the design minimalist and very much like a Leica rangefinder. It is lightweight, compact, and the pancake lens makes portability more fun. Like the autofocus, the camera’s image quality offers versatile RAW files, but its high ISO performance is where it lags.
Community Still Loves it

The current listings on eBay show a wide range of prices:
- Body only units from around $100–$225, depending on condition and location.
- Lenses bundled—especially popular options like the 20 mm f/1.7 pancake—push the price higher, often past $350–$400.
- Some rarer or boxed examples listed from Japan fetch even more, with several listings above $300–$400.
Historically, the GF1 prices dipped significantly, with users selling it for $50-75 a decade ago. However, in more recent years, with the evolution of cameras, particularly the GF1, it has found its people, thanks to its practicality. As someone said on Reddit, its appeal lies in the “toss-in-the-bag” setup.
In addition to compactness, the iconic design and nostalgia value are now driving sales. Moreover, the Four Thirds mount also has a good lens ecosystem, making it an ideal choice for anyone who wants a smaller camera and a variety of lenses. As GF1 is now a vintage mirrorless favorite, it proves that continued visibility and appreciation can take anyone farther away in life.
