With April coming to an end as I write this, we have come across new camera ranking lists, which depict three brands competing in the top 5. Canon barely managed to secure its spot in the top 5 this time, as Sony, Fujifilm, and Nikon took away major spots. But which of the three managed to take away the crown? The answer may surprise you.
According to Yodobashi Camera‘s sales (via Digital Camera Info), the crown was given to Sony, with Nikon taking two spots, and Canon getting one. Here is the list:
- Sony a7C II zoom lens kit
- Nikon Z50 II double zoom kit
- Sony a1 II body
- Nikon Z8 body
- Canon EOS R5 Mark II body
- Sony a7 IV body
- Sony a7C II Body
- Canon EOS R6 Mark II body
- Canon EOS R50 double zoom kit
- Nikon Z50 II 18-140mmVR lens kit

In another report published by MAP Times, we see not the top 10 but the top 20 cameras that were sold in April in Japan. While we assumed Sony would come at the time, it didn’t. Fujifilm pushed it back to the second place.
- Fujifilm X100VI
- Sony a7C II
- Fujifilm X-T50
- Nikon Z f
- Fujifilm X-T5
- Canon EOS R5 Mark II
- Nikon Z6 III
- Ricoh GR IIIx
- Sony a7 IV
- Canon EOS R6 Mark II
- Nikon Z50 II
- Nikon Z8
- Sony a7R V
- Fujifilm X-M5
- Ricoh GR III
- Panasonic LUMIX S9
- DJI Osmo Pocket 3
- OM SYSTEM OM-1 Mark II
- Nikon Z fc
- SONY VLOGCAM ZV-E10

From both lists, we can deduce that Sony is the winner, with six cameras, with Nikon coming in second with five cameras (removing repeated camera names), Fujifilm comes in third place with four cameras, and Canon comes fourth with three models. On the other hand, there are 10 full-frame models (without recurring models), 8 APS-C, and three compact cameras. Again, it is clear that full-frame, especially compact ones, are far more in demand for photographers.
However, the a7c II is one of the few cameras people still rely on as it is slightly better than the a7 IV, which features similar specs but a different body. Moreover, the device is perfect for both photos and videos, and is something new that photographers wanting a full frame will like. However, X100VI is one device that has a single handle that disrupted the market, but the stocks are available only in limited numbers. As a result, the sales of the model increase. Having seen
At the same time, most models on the list have been launched after 2020, which means that people buying right now are not looking at older models. One of the reasons is autofocus, with newer cameras sporting AI chips for better scene recognition. Or rebates that affect the list overall. Either way, Sony seems to be giving Canon a much harder time. We also believe that if Fujifilm GFX100 RF and half-frame become more viable to purchase, they may leave Sony behind, too, in some ways. Until then, keep an eye out for trend changes, which will be further affected by newer launches.
