The Canon G7x is trending right now and people are buying the camera again. So the Phoblographer has gone and updated our original review published in 2014 to include details about the camera today. Overall, we’d recommend that photographers go ahead and buy one if they’re so inclined to do so.
Below is the updated text from our full Canon G7x review, and you can find the entire thing here at this link.

Updated December 2024
We’re updating this review because in 2024, this camera is trending again. That’s because of how affordable it is and the fact that there is a current affinity for retro digital cameras. So is it worth buying today in late 2024? Considering that I went and bought a Canon S95 recently, I’d say so as long as you’re buying one in good condition. It’s very similar to buying a film camera in that you have to check various parts of it to make sure that it’s going to work without issues.
The 20.2MP sensor will mean that you’ve got enough resolution for social media and many online portfolios. I wouldn’t buy this camera to shoot video — or at least I wouldn’t use it primarily to do so. But for social media, the video resolution and capabilities of this camera are perfectly fine because everyone will be most likely viewing the videos on their phone.
But what makes this camera so attractive are the wifi capabilities, the looks that it can output, the small size, the lens, etc. Back when we first reviewed the camera, we kind of wanted an EVF. But these days, we’re perfectly okay without one. Sometimes, photography can be just for fun. And that’s exactly what this camera is doing. Don’t use it for serious work that you’re paid for. Use it to bring yourself joy.
