A few days ago, Canon officially announced that they would be releasing three special hybrid lenses on October 30. This has excited the brand’s fans and led to speculations about what these lenses could be. As the news about the lens is still hyping up the industry, both photography and videos, there is another report that may excite fans: the creation of Canon EOS R6 Mk III. Below, we detail everything we have learned so far.
Is Canon EOS R6 Mk III Really on the Way?
According to Canon Rumors, a user called E8M_8888 posted information about Canon’s new patent on Weibo. The registration’s model number (according to machine translation) is DS126941. Since the EOS R6 Mk III is a consumer camera, the dual-band WiFi indicates that it could be the same device.
However, the author also noted that the Chinese platform can be unreliable, especially if the specifications are to go beyond WiFi certification. However, considering the timing, it is speculated that the new device could be the EOS R6 Mk III. But that is not all. The report also goes on to detail the specs, which have come from third-party sources.

- 24-megapixel LC1720 sensor.
- DIGIC Accelerator accelerated processor, 8.5-stop collaborative image stabilization.
- Same focus system as EOS R5 Mk II.
- Highly reliable 14-bit 30fps RAW electronic shutter continuous shooting, reading speed 1/180s.
- In-camera neural network noise reduction and high-resolution magnification.
- Supports XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S recording of C4K/120p (S35) and 6K oversampled C4K.
- Supports 6K/30p and 4K/60p (S35) Cinema RAW Light recording.
At this stage, the specs could be entirely fiction, with very few features being carried forward. The sensor is also one of the things one can’t be sure of. However, in another article, TechInsights, who writes in-depth pieces about semiconductors, further confirmed that the LC1720 sensor was indeed used in EOS R3. Furthermore, the DIGIC accelerator, which was recently seen in EOS R1 and R5 Mk II, will make the EOS R6 Mk III more desirable.
Canon Must Step Up Their Game
The Canon EOS R6 series is a workhorse, and it has continued to shine amongst many hybrid shooters. In our review of both EOS R6 and EOS R6 Mk II, the cameras performed excellently, offering exceptional autofocus, image quality, dynamic range, and low light capabilities. To keep the standards up, Canon has to work around the existing features and further improve on them. The EOS R6 Mk II already featured a 24.2MP sensor, a bump from EOS R6’s 20.1MP CMOS sensor. However, if they add a back-illuminated sensor with a larger pixel count, it would be a treat for many.
Canon also has to ensure that EOS R6 Mk III is not a bad product. When the EOS R5 Mk II was announced, we were not impressed as there was very little innovation. Perhaps the EOS R6 III can fix that. But knowing how brands work, we aren’t too hopeful either. With most cameras catering to videos more than still, the question begs: who is thinking for photographers? In addition, Canon has to think about the price. Both cameras cost well over $2000, so the next one has to strike a balance between good features while not increasing the price tag. With Nikon, Sont, and Panasonic really thriving, Canon really has to create something that will help them topple Sony’s mirrorless share. That day still seems far away. But we do hope to see it arrive in the near future.
